Hello all,
I was doing a routine cleanup with the program CCleaner, which I've used many times in the past, and upon completion my computer completely froze up and required me to manually restart. Only minutes after restarting, my entire system froze up again, and my display became very distorted. This continued to happen for the next 10 minutes, until eventually I was given no display at all, only a black screen. I restarted and ran off Intel HD graphics to do a full wipe of drivers and reinstalled them, but this didn't seem to make a difference.
I contacted my graphics cards manufacturer EVGA and explained the issue. They instructed me to go into BIOS and check the 12v rail, saying that it should not fluctuate rapidly more than 0.5v. I found that the 12v rail was indeed fluctuating rapidly between 11.968v and 12.056v
I explained this to them, and they found it very concerning, They replied:
"The power 12v rail fluctuations are concerning for the overall stability of your system. I am not 100% sure that it is the sole cause of your graphics issues but it is definitely a factor.
If you would like to start an RMA on the 760 we wont mind however the problems will likely persists if the power supply is not replaced."
I decided to open up a ticket with my PSU manufacturer Corsair, instead having my graphics card RMA'd, since this is the fourth graphics card I've been through over the past year for similar issues. I explained my issues to Corsair and they replied:
"According to the ATX standard, the 12V line can fluctuate within ±5% (11.4V to 12.6V)."
Unfortunately, I do not have another system to test the card in, nor do I have a spare graphics card of equal power to test.
Thoughts?
