Well that bites! I don't need it anymore but I think it was a great service
to offer. Too bad they had to do this.

For the past several years, the standard Usenet answer to newsserver
problems was "sign up at news.cis.dfn.de/news.individual.net". They
skipped the 100000 users barrier a few years ago. It's a wonder that it
was free for such a long time.

Yes it did. I don't have a credit card or I would gladly pay that much for
it but as it is I can't. I do have news through my isp but they are just
terrible about not filtering out the porn and spam the way that individual
does.

you can despam your address for use with your isp.
and you can block the porn yourself too, just need to set up your settings
correctly.
