Baffling Pixel clocking scenario

Ok, so I am having a heck of a time trying to set a refresh rate to my liking on my gaming setup. What I am trying to get to happen just probably isn't possible, and most likely a lack of understanding on my part, but I would appreciate any help.

First off, I game on a 4k LED tv, at a resolution of 2560x1440 at 60hz. Now to get that resolution and refresh together, I had to create a custom resolution via Nvidia Control panel. By default, there is a resolution listed exactly as "4k x 2k, 2560 x 1440", but it only goes up to 30hz. My custom resolution allowed me to attach 60hz to it, which is why I went that route. Here is what is confusing me though...if I choose the already available 4k x 2k option, my monitor reads it receiving a signal of 2160p, proper 4k. However, when I use my custom resolution to get 60hz, my monitor only reads it is receiving a signal of 1080p. Now it is clearly not a true 1080p, as there is definitely a difference between the native 1080p setting and my custom 1440p setting. However, I swear when I compare the 4k 1440p and my custom 1440p, the 4k setting looks slightly cleaner, though not significantly.

What I really want is "4k x 2k, 2560 x 1440", and 60hz. I have also tried just doing a pixel overclock to 60hz from the 30hz under 4k, and it only allows me to go to 56hz, which won't even display anyway. One other tidbit of info, if I set my resolution to a true full 4k of 3840 x 2160, I can set 60hz, but at that resolution and high-ultra gaming settings my setup can only push out 30fps, which is not preferable to me. Any idea why I can get 60hz at full 4k, but not at 2560 x 1440 without creating a custom resolution, and losing the 4k signal my display would otherwise receive?

it seems your tv doesn't want to recieve 60hz at anything higher than 1080p, though you did force 56hz. what hdmi cord are you using? are there any alternate connections available? im guessing your using the highest spec newest hdmi(idk if its 1.4 or 2.0 or whatever). but if your just using some off the shelf cheap hdmi cord then it might not have the bandwidth to carry true 60hz at 1440p, though 30hz at 4k should theoretically require the same bandwidth.

when he says 4k x 2k... hes just reading what nvcp is telling him

I'm running 2.0 hdmi, and a compliant cable. You mention perhaps my tv won't receive anything 60hz beyond 1080p, but as I mentioned in my original post, it will receive 60hz at 3840 x 2160, which is even higher than the resolution I am gaming at, as well as a custom resolution of 2560 x 1440. That's whats really throwing me for a loop; I essentially have two resolutions of 2560 x 1440 to choose from: the one listed as 4k x 2k which will only do 30 but display as 2160p on my display info, and my custom 2560 x 1440 without the 4k x 2k, but will only display as 1080p on my display info.

And to the other poster, 2560 x 1440 is technically considered a certain level of 4k, though granted it isn't full 4k. Basically anything above 1080p could be labeled 4k, though there's no real noticeable difference until you get to 1440 and up. 1440 right now is really the sweet spot for gaming as far as frame rates and cranked up settings....unless of course you're running dual 980s, or the upcoming titan x.

Oh, I didn't know it was out. I know official specs and pricing were released, but didn't realize it was available.

Yeah, I'm sure you're right about 4k. I guess I just assumed since Nvidia Control Panel gives all resolutions above 1920 x 1080 a label of 4k x 2k that they too are technically considered 4k....guess that's what I get for believing Nvidia. Geez, first the 970s, now resolutions. LMAO

Haha I was just going to say.. Did you buy a 970 too? XD

Yeah, I did, and I went the 2x sli route with them. However, I just watched a video comparing performance between 980sli/970sli/single titan x, and I have to say I'm feeling a little better about my rig. You should check it out. 970sli hangs right with an x, frames times and fps...
