I have recently bought a second router (Tp-link Archer D5) as the one my ISP provided me with does not have bandwidth control (Netcomm nb604n).

However I have been told that unless the D5 is setup as my main router, bandwidth control will not work.

I have tried several setups with bandwidth control applied and they seem to work when I do speedtests on different devices with different priority settings / upload / download caps. However, I am not sure cos someone on another forum who seems to know what hes talking about says it is impossible.

Basically these are a few different set up methods I have tried :

1)
[HALL] wall socket -> [HALL] nb604n (bridged mode) -> [ROOM] ethernet cable to Archer D5 (wireless router mode) broadcasting wifi and direct ethernet to my PC. DNS / DHCP / pppoe settings on Archer D5

2)
[HALL] wall socket -> [HALL] nb604n (DNS / DHCP / pppoe settings on nb604n) -> [ROOM] ethernet cable to Archer D5 (wireless router mode) broadcasting wifi and direct ethernet to my PC

in both cases I have bandwidth control settings on with specific ip's for devices and bandwidth rules in place and they seem to work fine.

Anyone with experience can tell me which one of the 2 ways are better or do they work the same ?

In 1), I can access both the nb604n and Archer D5 admin pages, however my connections page in windows shows 2 connections, Im not sure if thats correct.

in 2) I can only access the D5 admin page, I have to unplug the the ethernet cable that is going from the nb604n to the archer D5 and plug it directly to my PC before I can access the nb604n admin page.

EDIT: For particular reasons, the NB604N always has to be outside in the hall connected to the wall phone socket as I am renting at the moment and do not want to / should not have my Archer D5 outside where the rest of the housemates can meddle with it.

Because I am renting at the moment and sometimes the other housemates torrent / stream or do other heavy bandwidth stuff that slows down the net so much I can barely surf the net, much less play any online games.

I cannot use one modem / router because I do not want the other housemates to know I am limiting their bandwidth. Hence why the nb604n has to always stay outside in the hall by the wall socket and the Archer D5 stays in my room.

Why does that matter ? How does this help in answering my question at all?

I am not cutting off their internet, just making it so everyone has equal bandwidth when the others are doing more bandwidth heavy stuff like torrenting / streaming / uploading.

If you really must know, I am renting a room from a relative while the rest are just occupants thats why I have the internet connection login info to adjust the router settings.

Get off your high horse. This is not an ethical debate.

My uncle pays for the internet. Ive spoken to him about this before and he told me to sort it out by myself however I can as he does not know anything about networking. The only condition was that he does not want to hear complaints from the other occupants about the internet whatever I do.

Hence my solution of bandwidth control where the rest of the occupants do not get unusable internet for the duration that someone else is hogging all the bandwidth.

And the reason I am keeping the D5 in my room is so nobody sees a new router in the hall and starts complaining to my uncle about anything should they happen to notice a drop in download speeds. (however unlikely, im just covering my bases)

Slower constant internet for all rather then unstable sometimes fast internet is a greater good that I am trying to achieve.

Regardless of how many routers you install, there will only be a specific amount of bandwidth available for ALL connections, regardless of which router they are connected to. Since all other routers must be connected to the primary source, adding another router does little anyhow.

And as i7 indicated, Tom's hardware does not allow or assist with the bypassing of any passwords, security measures, illegal activity or other questionable practices. I think this falls under questionable practices. Thread closed.
