I have recently bought a second router (Tp-link Archer D5) as the one my ISP provided me with does not have bandwidth control (Netcomm nb604n).
However I have been told that unless the D5 is setup as my main router, bandwidth control will not work.
I have tried several setups with bandwidth control applied and they seem to work when I do speedtests on different devices with different priority settings / upload / download caps. However, I am not sure cos someone on another forum who seems to know what hes talking about says it is impossible.
Basically these are a few different set up methods I have tried :
1)
[HALL] wall socket -> [HALL] nb604n (bridged mode) -> [ROOM] ethernet cable to Archer D5 (wireless router mode) broadcasting wifi and direct ethernet to my PC. DNS / DHCP / pppoe settings on Archer D5
2)
[HALL] wall socket -> [HALL] nb604n (DNS / DHCP / pppoe settings on nb604n) -> [ROOM] ethernet cable to Archer D5 (wireless router mode) broadcasting wifi and direct ethernet to my PC
in both cases I have bandwidth control settings on with specific ip's for devices and bandwidth rules in place and they seem to work fine.
Anyone with experience can tell me which one of the 2 ways are better or do they work the same ?
In 1), I can access both the nb604n and Archer D5 admin pages, however my connections page in windows shows 2 connections, Im not sure if thats correct.

in 2) I can only access the D5 admin page, I have to unplug the the ethernet cable that is going from the nb604n to the archer D5 and plug it directly to my PC before I can access the nb604n admin page.
EDIT: For particular reasons, the NB604N always has to be outside in the hall connected to the wall phone socket as I am renting at the moment and do not want to / should not have my Archer D5 outside where the rest of the housemates can meddle with it.
