just bought a new barton 2500 coupled with fan and heatsink.
Put in an exhaust fan and thin ide connectors and the idle temp of the cpu is running at 39 degrees. I played some games for a while and it went up to 55. Im still not sure if this is running too hot. I spoke to a guy in a computer shop and he said i should leave the supplied fan in cos if it burns out ill be able to get a new processor under warranty. Are there any other cooling measures that i can put in to try and get the temp down. Im still waiting on a 9600 pro and that will probably churn out some heat on top

Do you have:

1. Intake fans on your case as well as exhaust fans?
2. Some decent thermal paste?

I wouldn't have any worries about putting on a new HSF if you're concerned about temperatures. 55c is not too bad but any higher and I'd be worried. I have the same CPU and use a Volcano 9+ HSF on medium setting, and my CPU temp never goes above 45c even at full load.

😱 My CPU runs so hot it creates a quark-gluon plasma 😱

the thermal paste i got was provided with the heat sink.
It said that if i used thermal grease i would void the warranty. Although it was running at 55degrees i was only playing jedi knight outcast which is not particularily taxing. Im not sure if there is space for intake fans on the front of the case plus the vents arent that big.

55C under load is fine. Stock AMD coolers are not exactly amazing.

If you stuck a decent third-party cooler on it, you'd lower the temps a lot... But there's no real point unless you're hoping to overclock (which would also validate your warranty, but is pretty much impossible to prove).. If it is too hot & fries, it at least is covered by the warranty.

Although some stuff might be slightly more taxing on your CPU, you'll find that the temp won't rise above the JKO top for anything else anyway, maybe 1C difference.. As long as it's using the CPU constantly [which JKO is, as Gfx Cards don't do stuff like computer AI], it's a good indication of load temperature.

Nah, I just mean as opposed to the Retail one that comes with the Retail CPU, which is what I'm assuming you meant by it coming 'coupled' with the CPU.

If you buy OEM CPUs, they don't come with a Heatsink/fan.. and you have to buy your own.

e.g. a ThermalTake Volcano 7+ is going to give much lower temps than the stock AMD one.. (albeit sounding like a jet engine)

39C idle and 55C full load
I would say nth to worry about

WaterCooling is Better !! 😎
