Having decided to upgrade my PC, I was just about to go for a Barton XP2500 processor, but I see that from week 40 or so, the multiplier is LOCKED.

This seems to be a bit of a bummer. Although quite new to overclocking, this seems to imply that there is not much point to getting a 2500 barton anymore (other than FSB increase only).

My question is, should I stump up the extra cash for a 2800 Barton, or go for something in between (2600 or 2700)? The 2500 seemed to be the best bang for buck....now that the multiplier is locked, that doesnt seem to be the case anymore. Or am I wrong?

Thanks for the help.

from what I've read recently, it kind of depends upon your end goal.

The 2500's out there now that are locked are still adjustable on the FSB side. So, if you have a decent MB, you can still change your FSB from the stock 166Mhz to the 200Mhz and see a substantial gain.
That change alone would make it run like the 3000+ XP, although you *might* have to give it just a little more CPU voltage in the bios as well.

To go higher, you might want to see if the 2800 is affordable for you. I believe it is still unlocked. (better check though)

I've read lots lately about others using the 2800 with great success for lots of OC'ing.

Increasing the BUS and not the multiplier won't just increase clockrate, it would also increase memory speed and bandwidth, something you don't get when increasing just the multiplier, just make sure your mobo supports fixing (locking) the FSB:AGP😛CI ratio.

I know what everyone's been wondering - 2^33634943-1 IS NOT PRIME. Now, wasn't that worth running Prime95 for a month to know?
