Im using an MSI K9NGM motherboard with AMD 64 X2 2Ghz processor with 4GB DDR2 RAM & an 9800GT graphics card running on a 720p TV. 2 questions

1 - How well will BF3/MW3 & other new games work on my current settings?

2 - If I upgrade my GPU to a GTX 460/560/570 with a better PSU on the same motherboard & processor, how much better can things get?

Thanx

Great article Chris, thanks!
Btw what about the GTX 560? That's like the recommended nvidia card right? Should we look to the GTX 470 and the 6870 for a good comparison?

Will post results of my 9600GT + 3.12GB RAM [32-bit :( ] + Q8400 on 1024x768 lol.

[citation][nom]Gamer-girl[/nom]Surprising since some people where saying how BF3 was CPU intensive...[/citation]

It is. It isn't maxing out PhenomII 965 but uses more cores evenly.

For folks new to the battlefield scene. I HIGHLY recommend Battlefield: Bad Company 2. I got mine on a wicked steam sale for $7.99 I have put 400 hours into it. It plays awesome, looks awesome, sounds awesome. It isn't perfect but it's damn good. Lots of unlocks and map variety. - Doug Rochford

THANK YOU! waiting for this, i know what my upgrade will be :) 7 series Card. it should be a enough to run 60 fps average at 1080 with a single gpu on ultra with AA if amd don't bulldozen this series down like the cpus....

great article, awesome and informative read.
bf3 uses fxaa that was developed by nvidia to compete with amd's mlaa. i wonder if that's why when amd cards use fxaa they take a performance hit. otherwise amd cards' fps numbers look great, even better in crossfire. too bad their driver support is !@#$y.
i should nitpick one thing: the core i3 gets more fps than fx 8150. when fx 8150's 6-8 cores are enabled, fps drops. the hyperthreaded intel cpus don't seem to have that problem... must be those pesky win 7 schedulers ;P

MW3 will run like a boss, dx11 games won't run using dx11. My 9600GT can run most DX9/10 games fairly well.
9800GT should push 25 to 50 fps at that reso depending on detail level (look at the second nvidia chart).

This game doesn't care about the CPU really...(look at the chart)

All three cards will run well, drop in a 570 for ultra settings or if you plan on upgrading your display (and funds permit), though honestly i think a 460/560 should be ample (again, look at the charts!)

Cheers

BTW Chris, doesn't the carpet stand a chance of frying all those lovely i-wish-they-were-mine (alternatively: i-wish-i-worked-at-Tom's ;) ) cards due to ESD?

Or is that an anti-static rug?
Just curious :)

Very impressive article. That took a LOT of work. The text also explained every little question it raised. I would have liked to have seen an attempt to find the weakest acceptable CPU though; how well can an AMD Athlon II X2 260 play this game, or an Intel e5200? A lot of people still have rigs built when the recommendation was for 2GB of RAM; can they play well, or is a RAM upgrade necessary for them?

Incidentally, I'd love to see something similar done for Skyrim!

Again, very nice job. Get some sleep.

While the i3 does do well in lab tests I wouldn't suggest this CPU. Latency is a huge factor and with an additional free core I often see a reduction around 8~10ms. You will also need at least a third core to mitigate the use of VOIP's software most often used with games such as this. Most all players will use Team-speak or Ventrilo.

Regarding the nasty artifacs:

They arent there in MP (on a gtx 295). Furthermore I'd recommend 200series user to downgrade their drivers to BF3 beta ones

i would've liked to have seen GTX 460s benched...because my game has really bad stuttering, i'm pretty sure it's the game, because with everything enabled on ultra(even AA)I can pull 50-70 FPS, and annoyingly enough my game dips down to 29-30 at times and won't recover back up to 50+ til after a few minutes

Thank you Chris for doing this article. Im sadly rocking an Athlon II 620 and AMD/ATI 4670 rig and was really helpful to see how my pathetic little card performs with this game. Here to hoping I can get by on low settings at 1600x900!!!!

Thank you for taking the time to do this.

I was however curious about VRAM consumption at various resolutions/quality settings and how this could effect performance. Nvidia's 580 gtx, for example has 1.5gb and 3gb offerings. I'm assuming you're using the 1.5gb version in these tests.
