Help me choose the best cpu cooler for my e8400 overclock. i plan to o/c to 3.825-minimum to ~4.2 or 4.3 and wanted to know plain and simple what is the best AIR cooler [bang for buck] cooler for me? i was looking at the xigmatech s1283, tuniq tower, TRUE 120, and acrtic freezer pro 7

if you have the money AND THE TIME TO LAP the TRUE, get it.

if you lack the patience and/or $ n skill, get the S1283. make sure you get the backplate for it though..

The Xiggy and TRUE are far superior to the 2+ year old overpriced Zalman. But I guess it should be good enough for a dual core, dunno about 4ghz though.

noctua c12p - keeps my 8600 at 4ghz
on low at 28c idle, 45c load.
on high at 28c idle 40 load.

doesnt seem to matter which i set it to, never goes above 45...

it will probably be a bit hotter with your 8400 as your overclocking that little bit more, so just make sure the supporting fans keep the air circulating.

There is no real decision here: The Xigmatek is $18 after rebate at the egg.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003

I have direct experience here. On a whim, I saw the sale at the Egg, and bought the Xigmatek to replace my AC Freezer 7 Pro. I was a big AXF7P devotee, but the X dropped my temps by nearly 10 degrees.

At 1.36 volts and 3.85 MHz, my e8400 C0 idles at about 36 degrees (thats the hotter core, but the cooler-and-presumably-broken core idles at 31 degrees) and barely cracks 50 degrees at full 100% Memtest + Prime95 load. For the same situations, with the ACF7P it idled at about 40 and hit into the low 60s, reaching 63 or so.

The X is also a notch above the AC in build quality as well. I briefly researched the X before buying it, and there were a few reviews that placed it as either the #1 or #2 best available cooler.

The only negative comments were about its push pin connectors. But these connectors are the identical ones as on the AC (probably same OEM firm made them). If you take 30 seconds to sketch the lock vs. unlock configuration on a piece of paper, you will get it mounted on the first try in under a minute.

Good luck!

I wondered about that also. I really didn't need it though. The cooler is light enough, and if you get the pins in right, it just doesn't move and simply isn't necessary.

Once again, the trick is to draw out a diagram about how how the push pin arrows should be oriented when unlocked and locked. It just makes things much easier.

Interesting how the cooler does not have free shipping, but the bracket does. That's the opposite of when I bought the cooler. Obviously they are hoping you see the $18 price and just add the bracket in. It's just a feel-good extra hassle IMHO.

Thought I would throw in my 2 cents here- I have a E7300 OC'd to 3.9 Ghz @ 1.37V and idles in the mid 20's, load at highest point is in the mid 40's. It's like 50 bucks at the egg. Large cooler, but quiet when on low fan speed. Hell, can't complain with such low temps for a 100 dollar cpu @ 3.9 ghz stable and cool. Just my recommendation.

This is an addition to my earlier post. I'm sorry, left out the most important part. The cooler I have is the Zerotherm Nirvanva. :pt1cable:

Australia. prices suck... $50 for my S1283 and another $13 or something for the bracket :ouch: TRUE's are like $150...

4870X2's are like $700-$800 and my 9600GT was $138  . mind you that is AUD not USD so..
