Hi everyone, I’m looking to get into mechanical keyboards as a hobby, but I don’t want to spend a fortune right away. I’d love some recommendations for a good budget-friendly starter kit that still offers customization options like hot-swappable switches and decent keycaps.

Are there any brands or models that are great for beginners? Also, any tips on what to look for when choosing my first board?

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Might want to specify a budget since the term budget is a relative term. We're going to need a number beyond which you think it's expensive for you.

Would also be a good idea to mention where you're located and if you have any preferred sites for purchase.

this seemed like a pretty good buy at a great price for a mechanical KB

can start there and decide if you want something different with a new set of switches or whatever. or even if you decide to go bigger down the line with a more expensive more customizable board, at least your starter was pretty cheap.

i found that i did not fully understand all the intricacies of this world until i had my first one. then i re-explored all the various terms and what they all meant compared to what i had in front of me. then i could decide what if anything i wanted to change about a particular feature. took a year or so but i eventually went to a new board from my starter board. this has what i wanted except for heavier keys which i swapped out once i got it.

i ended up with this one which honestly if the switches were heavier out of the box, it would be perfect other than not being totally full size.

frankly if that MSi existed when i was shopping i likely would have gone for it for the full size board.
