Which card has the best price/performance ratio at the mid-range (i.e. $200)? I am now looking for R9600Pro or GF5700Ultra. It seems that the former performs well at DX9 while the latter at both DX8.1 and DX9. I like playing high texture game like HL2 or Doom3.

Thank you for yr suggestions

You should take a look at the 9500pro cards, i think allstar still carries them.

If you can go maybe another $30 or $40, you can get a R9800NP which will KICK A$$!

Depending on how hard you look, you might find a 9700 non-pro for that price. The 9600 Pro is a great card, but it's high clock speed can't substitute for the fact that the 9700/9800 cards (except the SE) have twice as many pipelines!

I like the BBA 9600 Pro in the under $200 range. Good solid card very over-clockable, low power, and is almost $200 less than the 9800 Pro. It uses same RAM as the 9800 Pro. I have a 9600 Pro and I just picked up an AWI 9800 Pro. It's a fine card but dollar for dollar the 9600 Pro is a great deal.

ATI should have ported the 9800 to 0.13u technology. Would have been considerably better than the 9800 Pro XT.

This is pissing me off more and more, why come out with the confusing SE name, which implies a second (ie, improved), edition, when they already had the VE name that everyone understood meant Value Edition? They are really risking customers with this dumb ploy, all it does is dissuad the uninitiated from buying the more expensive full version (because they don't know this is worse), which costs them money, plus piss off customers in the end, which also costs them money!

Yeah, plus the confusing number naming scheme, where a higher numbered card is often not a higher performer.

Yes, but they don't care so much about that.

What is better? A 9700 pro or a FX 5900 non ultra? can someone link me to a site that compares all known cards on one page?

I think the numbers represent how PROFITABLE the card is for ATI to market. They make a little on the 9000, a little more on the 9100, a little more on the 9200, etc! So for customers to think model number represent performance in all cases doesn't do much harm to ATI. But the SE naming scheme does, because ATI makes far less on a 9800SE than, say, a 9700 Pro.

Corporations don't care about that, it's about making money. The SE name hurts both the user and profits, so it makes no sense.

They made the 9800SE to get rid of defective 9800 chips. But by calling it the 9800SE, they alienate uninformed 9800 customers, causing them to by the cheaper card, lowering their profits and risking their reputation.

It was easy with the 9500, based on the 9700. But the 9800SE, based on the 9500...should have been called a 9600. Since the 9600 already existed...that left a naming problem.

hmmm is it just me or do i think FX5700Ultra has a different design than the current NV3Xs. Cause it's definately not an speed boost from 5600Ultra. It' something new IBM and nVidia cooked up. I have great expectation in this card. :D
