I have 2 Asus 1ms RS, 1920x1080, 144 hz refresh rate monitors from yesteryear. Considering a new PC build with RTX 2080 or 2080Ti and deciding on possible monitor upgrade.

Really just looking for an open discussion on current gaming monitors. There are so many new technologies and ultra widespread nowadays I need help softing through all the mularkey. I was considering buying a television but decided that money would be better spent on gaming monitors, more notices of upgrade due to my time spent on the computer and the proximity of PC monitors to my eyes.

Keep in mind I'll be building a $3000+ PC if I can find the right performance parts and if there is a monitor that gives real world performance to utilize that system I would like to find it or hear arguments for real performance vs marketing nonsense etc. Thanks! 😀

Not that many technologies really.

You have FreeSync and G-sync for variable refresh rate. Get rid of screen tearing. Ultra low motion blur that some people swear by, best when you know you can achieve the frame rate of the panel. And the various LCD techs and their characteristics.

Performance comes down to the system you build to run it. Everything else is just what it looks like, response times, and input lag.

TN - What you have now, poor viewing angles and less color reproduction, ultimate response times, color uniformity is usually good.
IPS/PLS - Good viewing angles, good color reproduction, higher response times, though 5ms is perfectly acceptable. Color uniformity is usually good, but less so on gaming centric monitors.
VA - Good viewing angles, okay color reproduction, good response times 2-4ms. Option for curved displays. Color uniformity, backlight bleed, can be an issue.

With Nvidia now supporting many FreeSync options that has opened the market up quite a bit.

So, number one, what resolution are you targeting? What size? Large the panel the higher the resolution you will want for pixel density.

RTX2080 or RTX2080Ti certainly allows for 4K@60hz, 1440p@144hz, 3440x1440@75-100hz. Or you can look at the high refresh 1080p options at 180hz or 240hz. G-sync is preferable with an Nvidia card, that module does a good job of removing input lag as much as possible.

There are exotics like 3840x1080, 5120x1440, and the recently released 4K 120hz monitors.

Now you fancy G-sync panels are pricey. Looking at $800-1300 depending on the size. Makes FreeSync panels, which average about $200 less, look pretty decent.
