Hello, I am planning to do some upgrading to my system. I use a 32" FHD TV as my main monitor for over a year now. I know that 1080p is too pixelated on a 32" TV, especially when using it as a monitor.
So I wanted to upgrade to a 27" IPS 1440p monitor but I don't think my system will handle it.
I have 2x GTX 770 in SLI and recently I started having difficult times playing modern games cause the became more demanding. I used to max out every game at 1080p but not any more. Also I really got bored of the SLI. It is very baggy sometimes, some games don't even use it on launch and some don't gain much performance boost. A lot of times I found my self disabling SLI just to play the game smoothly even though it was lower fps.

Anyway.. back to the main question. What graphics card do you recommend for 1440p gaming without needing to upgrade it soon. I know that GTX 970 is pretty good for that resolution but what about in a year? Will it be enough? I was also considering the R9 390 and 390X. With the new AMD software that was released, I got an appeal towards AMD, since I was having troubles with some of the latest Nvidia drivers.

Sorry for the long post I just wanted to include the details to let you understand my situation.
Thanks.

The 980 is too expensive. I don't want to spend that much. I found the 970 and the r9 390 around 350 euros. The 390x at 450 and 980 at 520 so there is a big difference in price.

If you can fit one of the bands that have 3 fans go for one of those. I'm using a gigabyte 390 though voltage locked using it stable at 1100MHz core 1600MHz memory, stays below 70c while benchmarking on firestrike.

For the record, the article just seems incorrect. It recommends the 390X based on price difference claiming it cost significantly less with battling performance to the 980, however, the 980 can be had for not much more. The article says 'quite a bit more' when that is not true.

You can get a 390X for close in price to a 980.

i was only pointing out the nod the 390 got for the 1440p gaming over the 970 :)

folks argue this stuff all the time. some see the $50 as barely more in cost and others see it is as a huge increase. depends on how you look at that $50 and the extra performance it brings. it's very subjective and i don't have an opinion either way. depending on budget, i can suggest many different options.

Alot more people are going towards the MSI, as it has a high clock on it aslong with the Gigabyte.

EVGA has been caught with there chips being not aligned on the heat sink correctly..(Tho, they replied with it being how its suppose to be).

ASUS is always just a solid company to fall back on..
and Gigabyte is generally the same way.

As for the 970's... MSI>Gigabyte>ASUS>EVGA.

Agree with everything you said, just pointing out the article writes it as 'quite a big difference' in price which would make its recommendation correct if it was $100+ as I think the editor meant by going with MSRP or normal prices.

For the OP, the 390 looks the way to go.
