As you said, Ribald the Adventure Mart dealer has one of the best items
in the game. Its far too easy with potions of master thievery. Gotta
love thieves though, you can get this item straight away after Chateau
Irenicus!
Your cowled wizard contact (forget his name) in the government district
who sends you to find Valygar.
I'd pickpocket all the shopkeepers you can, there is at least one other
very good item around but memory fails me on its identity and location.
The two nobles sitting on the deck at the south edge of the promenade
have a lot of ok stuff, but it is random. They are two of the most
deserving as well.
Lehitan has that pile of excellent gems, but you can get those
regardless when you complete the Copper Coronet back rooms quest.
Any guard has a decent chance of either a scroll or a good gem or piece
of jewellry, or coins. I got a lot of very good scrolls from the city
guards. Worth untold thousands, as many were 5th or 6th level spells.
Pretty much any noble will have something of worth, even if it is coins
it is worth it in the early game.
Most NPC's who talk to you then leave can be pickpocketed if you are
quick, as they are leaving. Haste or boots of speed help. Don't ever
recall getting anything great. I think I got a scroll from a Genie
once.
And who can speak of the likes of Kangaxx, Firkragg, Elminster, Adalon
and Drizzt, and many others. Always forgot in the heat of the moment,
though once I scooped something from Catie-Brie but it was forgettable.
Every time I play I swear I'm going to sweep each area and check
everyone but I always miss lots, there are just so many and you get
easily side tracked with quests.
