The sites I'm aware of where you can perform a reverse image search are Google Images and TinEye, however I find these often fail to find the image even when I know it's online.

Are there any other sites where you can perform such a search and is there any that is known to be the best one with the most comprehensive crawling/indexing?

Not an answer - just some questions.

Any pattern to the failures?

If you know that the images are online and fail to be found look for reasons as to why the images were not found. Timed out perhaps?

What type of images, format, particular websites, copyright considerations, are being searched?

Search criteria: are you able to filter the search at all?

TinEye's website currently references having 58.4 billion images. That would take a long time to search even with some filtering etc. to narrow down the search.

What is the search or "waiting time".

Not sure about if and when any requested image search is "given up". Likely some time and/or other limits are in place.

I haven't noticed a pattern in terms of what it fails to find.

Time outs don't happen. The search is always as quick as a textual google search.

The format is usually jpeg, no particular type of image, no copyright considerations, AFAIK.

Both Google and TinEye use AI to guess what it thinks you want, which is not what you really want. Worse, with politics and SEO it gives you what it thinks you should want. It's pretty obvious google searches in general have gone down the toilet in recent years since they went to AI, probably just the fault of the incompetent people they have programming that AI. I mean just look at what pops up now under visually similar images.

Get a "search by image" extension and then just smash away a single query to multiple engines.

You will find results similar on a few, and wildly different on others depending on their indexing methods.

Wonderfully, porn is the most prolific and has the largest content base and unsurprisingly is the searched for and therefore the most accurate, while nature images or clips from movies will be harder to find as less would have been posted overall.
