Like the title suggests, I'm looking for the best solid state drive that will work with the MSI Z170A Krait Gaming 3X Motherboard. Under $200 is preferable, and speed is more important than capacity. I currently have a Crucial BX200 and it just isn't cutting it: any help would be appreciated.

I have the Samsung 950 Pro 256Gb and it's pretty quick in everything so far. To be fair though I pretty well only use it as a boot drive, I'm not copying to and from it a lot with other SSDs in my system, so can't say how fast/don't have anything that will do 1300Mbs read to write to it that fast.
That SSD is still fairly fast, so I'm wondering what exactly your ISSUE is that you expect a faster SSD to address. It's 540MB/490MB/s sequential read/write.

I have actually TESTED different SSD's specifically to see what is noticeable and what is not. Even a crappy SATA1 with 150/130 read/write holds up most of the time. Slightly slower boot by a couple seconds compared to Samsung 840 Pro, but game loads are pretty close, and a lot of the time programs and data run out of the system memory (i.e. DDR3).

I suggest explaining what your problem is, but it's likely that the solution is:

a) more system memory, or
b) better CPU, or
c) better GPU

I can recommend something like a SAMSUNG 850 EVO
250GB http://pcpartpicker.com/product/3kL7YJ/samsung-internal-hard-drive-mz75e250bam
500GB http://pcpartpicker.com/product/FrH48d/samsung-internal-hard-drive-mz75e500bam

(and install Samsung Magician to test and set it up.)

*M.2 SSD
THIS is an excellent drive-> http://pcpartpicker.com/product/FdDzK8/samsung-internal-hard-drive-mzv5p256bw

"Up to 2,500MB/s sequential read and 1,500MB/s write"

I don't know if it will fix your problem since it wasn't explained.

My biggest issue with it is that the speeds aren't consistent at all.
I have 16GB of DDR4-3000mhz RAM, an i7-6700k, and a GTX 970 so I don't think it's an issue with other hardware unless something is very, very wrong.

Are the 950 Pro m.2 SSDs worth the price tag?

Hey,
I just added the Samsung 950 Pro and the specs for that above.

I can't judge if it is worth it or not but it will help a bit any time you heavily access the SSD such as bootup.

*You still have not explained your problem. You say "speeds aren't consistent at all" but I don't know what you mean by that.

If it's about GAMING and your FPS, then the SSD has nothing at all to do with that, the drive is only used when a game or later loads are happening; otherwise the CPU is reading from your DDR4 memory. Fluctuations in frame rate are normal, so please be SPECIFIC as to the problem.

Sorry about that: by inconsistent speeds I meant the read speeds often drop so low to the point where my hard drive would be faster.
