I'm deciding between gtx 980+4790k or 970+5820k is the 2 extra cores really necessary?

if you are playing games and streaming then you should probably go with the 4790k and the gtx 980, make sure to overclock as the gtx 970 can beat the 980 when it is overclocked.

If you don't want to overclock the cpu, consider the xeon e3 1231 v3, saves you $80 and the cost of an aftermarket air cooler. The 980 can be overclocked too.

yes i know the gtx 980 can overclock too, i was just making the point that he should overclock because it will improve performance by miles, i never said he should get a gtx 970.

and yes the e3 1231 is a good CPU

The 5820k will require you to get a more expensive x99 mobo, while the 4790k is paired with a z97 mobo. For cpus at these price ranges, that extra 2 cores would not be really necessary for most people. The 4790k has hyperthreading, meaning 8 threads for multithreaded applications which some may argue might be more than enough for most people too.
