You can combine a 6970 and a 6990. The review suggests it's quite potent.

The PC Power and Cooling Silencer PSU has some problems with noise (read Johnny Guru's review) and it is not modular. It also heats up. For about the same price you could go with the Corsair HX 850, but it is a little small. The Corsair AX 1200 would be perfect if it was in budget.

I like the first build better. It is screaming fast and has the Patriot Wildfire running the OS. You would have to be a heavy gamer to appreciate its sheer capacity. Still think you should go with 1866 RAM though.

But wouldn't you have to drop the core frequency of the 6970 to match that of the 6990?

Even when you CrossFire unequal cards, I think the clocks run at stock (or OC, if that may be the case). The workload is divided based on how many frames the card can process.

Even if I'm wrong, the 6990/6970 setup beats 580 SLI at high resolutions with AA according to the review.

Yeah, switching to the AX1200 would be my first upgrade if the budget allowed. I went with capacity over efficiency, but I'll change it.

The cheapest kit would raise the price $19. But I guess that shouldn't matter, it's a $2000 build. :D

Edit: Changed it, and with a different motherboard came in under-budget after rebates.
