Are you serious, ID became a household name because of the games you mentioned, they were not super famous before that. I did not run out and pick up doom2 because I knew the name ID. I ran out and spent 3k on a new computer setup just because I played doom2 MP. You are acting as if ID was a household name back then and they were not. If another dev would have made said games, they would be well off and well known as ID are today.
Also, you say they were boring except for MP, so is battlefield and I believe that is what was intended. A quick SP campaign to get the feel and then onto MP for the next 2 years of greatness.
Duke3d was a great game, from a dev that could not manage to create a sequel.
Descent was neat, but never got cool until the freespace series.
And really, you mention Raven? The dev that made doom clones in the form of Heretic and Hexen, I enjoyed what they were but have no idea how you can bash on Quake while loving Hexen? Or perhaps you mean the awesomeness that showed up later as Star Trek Elite Force. Or perhaps even, the worst of all quake games, Quake 4. Raven made a couple good titles (Jedi Knight series, SOF, Wolfenstein)
[citation][nom]killerclick[/nom]I think Oblivion was scaled down to mainstream PC level hardware when it was released. In 2006 Xbox 360 was way ahead of what most PCs could do gaming-wise. If the Xbox 360 and PS3 are good enough for Crysis 2, they should be good enough for TES V and I'd rather have a somewhat graphically simplified game in 18 months than a visually awesome game in five years.[/citation]
I rented the 360 version and then purchased the PC version. My PC was not top end but is sure as hell looked better than the 360.
