Big LCD widescreen monitors ?

tmac, what do you mean it inserts a black frame in between frames? Due to pixel response time wouldn't that look like crap?

the viewsonic VX2235wm is not bad.. I got one recently and it's great. Huge difference if you're upgrading from 17 inch CRT 5:4 to 16:9 22 inch. Those HD movies never looked better. And 22 inch is great for gaming.. it's not too big so u don't really have to turn your head to look at the corners. :lol:
But i may consider a 2407 pretty soon. You'd just want a bigger one after experiencing big monitors.

In an attempt to push this thread back where it came from (Big LCD monitors)... Are there any new 24 inch monitors on there way soon? Any with improved performance? 22" as well?

Good 22" monitors:
Viewsonic VX2235WM
Samsung 225BW

I'm not too crazy about the Samsung 225BW. I compared it side by side with the 21" Samsung 215TW over at J&R Computer World in NYC.

The Samsung 225BW is around $380 (I don't remember exactly), it is both larger and cheaper than the $460 Samsung 215TW. But it is obviously a 6-bit LCD monitor.

Unfortunately the PCs didn't have games installed to test drive the monitors. Therefore I had to simply base my opinion strickly on image quality (namely desktop background), and text clarity. I used the Autumn background to checkout the how well both monitors can display a lot of details and colors.

One thing that I definitely noticed on the 225BW was the pixelation and color distortions on certain parts of the tree bark. In contrast, the 215TW had no such problems with pixelations and color distortions. In addition, the colors in general looks better on the 215TW than on the 225BW. But I didn't bother adjusting any of the hues in the grpahics setting. I left everything at factory default settings. Besides, I was on my lunch hour and didn't have time to screw around much.

To my eyes, the text on the 225BW was rather harsh, even after adjusting the brightness, contrast and sharpness settings. I think there is more spacing in between the pixels in the 225BW monitor compared to the 215TW montior. The text seems to be a little super-imposed on each other.

As everyone already knows, using resolutions smaller than native resolution degrades the images and text a little. The Autumn background on the 225BW doesn't seems as sharp as on the 215TW, and the color distortions and pixelations are still there. Text seemed sharper and easier to read on the 215TW as well.

Between these two monitors I would pony up the extra $80 (plus taxes) for 8-bit Samsung 215TW 21" monitor. The slightly smaller real estate is more than made up for by image quality. As I said in the beginning, there were no games installed so I couldn't tell if either one had issues with ghosting.

Yeah, the 22" monitors don't perform as well as some of their most expensive counterparts, but I really like the price for them. I saw the 215TW at Fry's but couldn't do a direct comparison like you did since the 225BW was a couple of comps away, but I noticed the 215TW was quite a bit better than the 225BW. But like you said, there is a price difference not to mention less real estate which also factors into the equation.

I'm planning on buying a couple of monitors on Black Friday, so I'll probably jump on the best deal possible whether 22", 21" or 24" (not in numeric order because I typed it that way)...

Hopefully I can net a nice 24" for 450 or so, or maybe a nice 21" for under 300
