Question BIOS Changes, Save and Restart, Temp Power Off

When changing certain settings in BIOS, and choosing "save and restart", the BIOS will save and sometimes immediately (jarringly) shut power off for just a few seconds before it powers back on and proceeds as normal. (Current mobo seems to do it every save now.) Is this normal? Why does it need to power off like this? :confused_old:

I've been wondering why motherboards behave like this. (My old mobo sometimes did the same, so I assume it is normal when changing certain settings?) Haven't found much help searching online. Seems painful for components, hard drives, etc... and for myself as well! UEFI related? Should I reset my BIOS to defaults? Any theories or knowledge relating to any of this is greatly appreciated.

Relevant Parts:
ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming (MB) (current)
GIGABYTE GA-F2A88X-D3H (MB) (previous)

? When you come out of UEFI it's basically a boot. You may get a post beep and the whole routine. It has to reload OS with the new UEFI instructions.

I think the ultimate goal is not to be going into your UEFI so much because everything is running the way you want it to. You would only want to restore defaults if you feel you have messed something up and want to get back to where you started. I personally tend to agree it's better to use sleep mode and avoid numerous cold starts but that is a contested position, and in any case, it is not related to popping in and out of the UEFI.

Usually after "save and restart" (in BIOS) it just quietly restarts: no power off, no clicks or odd events, fans keep running, etc. But in these cases, perhaps only if particular settings are changed, the BIOS saves but (obviously, jarringly) shuts off power for a few seconds, then turns back on and reboots. It's like some kind of advanced power cycle, that I assumed it performed out of some necessity.

You've never encountered this? I don't usually even dive very deep into weird settings. I have a new board and have been having some issues, though. I think the last things I changed were boost and performance enhancer related (disabling to see if it helps stability).

Update 8-2: Yup, every mobo in the house does this. Even little ASRock AM1B-ITX, which does it every single time (maybe a bit longer, 5 seconds), no matter if set to defaults. Weird that my latest ASUS did not do it until lately.

Update 8-14: Still haven't found anything about this behavior. Seems normal, but no idea why it's necessary. I hate it as much as ever. Sorry, hard drives...
