I've been hoarding parts for quite a while and finally got to put together my first computer today. When turning it on, it boots, but BIOS doesn't recognize the keyboard I've plugged in, so I can't do anything.

There have been threads like this in the past that I dug up, and the common solutions aren't doing it for me:

  • The USB plugs give power and I can charge my phone from them, they just can't figure out there's a keyboard attached.
The keyboard is plug and play (that's the whole reason I own it).
My motherboard (Intel DH67BL- it's old!) does not have a PS/2 port.
I have tried every USB port. None of them work.
Unplugging the SATA cable from the hard drive and booting up changes nothing. So does removing/putting back in the CMOS.
Some posts reference updating BIOS to fix the problem. I cannot convince BIOS to boot from a CD containing the IFlash Memory Update Utility. The user manual references an ISO Image BIOS Update File that will automatically launch an update on booting up but I can't for the life of me find a download of this.

My mouse has been having the same problems, if it matters any.

Am I doomed? 🙁 All I can think of at this point is buying a second keyboard to try.

Solution
how about testing is the USB slot is faulty or the BIOS chip is...and if it is they probably replace it it for you. and it wouldnt cost as much a new motherboard...but hey it's your motherboard so..if just wanna buy a new one go ahead...
Update: got it to boot from the Windows 10 disk in the optical drive. (The diagram of the motherboard mislabeled which pins on the BIOS Configuration Jumper Block would send it to Maintenance mode vs. Normal mode.) Unfortunately it still won't recognize my keyboard or either of my two mouses. Help would be very much appreciated.

Well try powering down you pc...remove the power cable from the outlet then look for the CMOS battery, it looks like a watch battery, remove it for 5 mins...than put it back then power the system back on. that will reset the CMOS.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but that's exactly what I just did. Problem persists.

oh ok i mis read and thought you you the reset pin....well did you check the USB slot if they are clean?? also try another keyboard that you know is working...i wanted to tell you to go in the bios and check the usb if they are enabled there but you can't use the mouse and keyboard...also i wanted to ask have you tried installing windows yet? sometimes the mouse and keyboard might not work in POST but after windows is loaded it will work.

As I mentioned, I did manage to get to the beginning of the W10 install. Unfortunately I can't actually do the install because it requires keyboard or maybe mouse input. I guess I'm going to have to go out and buy another keyboard 🙁 the USB slots look clear to me. There are eight of them so I don't think dirt/dust/etc. should prevent me from using every single one.

rather than buy one just borrow from a friend or a neighbor .. hhmm something is definitely wrong if your inside windows shell and still couldn't the mouse or keyboard. but as i said maybe the problem is in the BIOS settings and have the USB turned off..but in order to verify that you need a keyboard 1st....but if you did manage to get a keyboard that is working and plug it in and still didn't work suggest goto a tech and have your motherboard checked out.

Well, keyboard #2 did not work. What kinds of things can a tech do that I can't do at home? It seems like I'm probably going to have to buy a new motherboard...

I had the same problem with an old windows xp that I inherited when I was little. On my CMOS setup, I eventually found something in FEATURES SETUP called USB FUNCTION FOR DOS that was disabled. All I had to do was enable it and my usb showed up.
