I just get a black screen after the windows-logo.

my specs:
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z87-HD3
GPU: Gigabyte Radeon R9 290
CPU: Intel i5-4670k
RAM: A-DATA 8gb (2x4gb)
PSU: be quiet! 600W 80+ Gold
HDD: 1TB Seagate desktop SSHD

I did send in the GPU and there's no hardware error in it. I've tried reinstalling windows 7, downloading all updates, installing all mobo-updates, flashing the BIOS, using Display Driver Uninstaller before retrying to install the GPU-drivers. But whatever I do i still get that damn black screen after installing the GPU-drivers.

The latest thing I tried was disabling the onboard graphics in BIOS, this will also make windows not start. So I'm guessing that windows 7 is using onboard graphics through my r9 290? Or maybe it believes that the r9 290 is the onboard gpu? I don't know, I have huge gaps in my knowledge about computers. Anyone know what I should do next?

The latest drivers from the AMD website and the ones I could find on gigabytes webpage specifically under my graphics card. And I did make sure that I chose the drivers for Windows 7 64-bit.

Thx for the help, this seems to fix this ongoing problem!!! But what helped me in the end was NOT to use AMD Catalyst Uninstaller before but ONLY using the Display Driver Uninstaller.

Update: still some black screen crashes, but only early in gaming like within 15-30 minutes. In long gaming sessions when the GPU fan is constantly blowing at 50-57% no crashes yet. Read some posts that referred to a GPU memory heat issue, what can explain the early gaming crash when GPU, CPU and Case fans are not at full speed yet.

Been having same problem with 280x. Found a fix. Go to safe mode. Then msconfig. Under services disable AMD fuel and AMD external something. Reboot to normal after doing that.

Hello there guys. I had the same problem for years. BUT i found something to fix it WITHOUT unistalling the CCC . Follow me carefully step by step! First of all my aplogize mine is in Dutch.

So first open up the CCC by rightclicking on your desktop and click on AMD Cataclyst Control Center.

Click on "preferences". Its on the right top corner.

Now select advanced view.

youre panel should now look like this.

On the left click on video and select color. And there you have the tricky thing. Its probably checked on Default which make everything just a black screen for some reason. All you have to do is select one of the other choises like i did on the picture.

All you have to do now is save your settings again :).

I didnt register so i would be happy if you just say thnx in comments if it worked ofc.

This got me past the black screen and freeze immediately after logging into windows.
Have a new R9 280.

Still getting crash and freeze when playing games after a few minutes.
Using the Gigabyte GURU app, have determined it appears to crash when the GPU temp hits about 78 degrees C.
My work around at the moment is manual fan control, which is a little more agressive than the auto fan control.
This is working so far with 3DMark where I've been testing.

Edit: correction. After a few more crashes, I was running the Firestorm demo in 3DMark, and the system froze. Now windows won't boot, and I've discovered graphical glitches in the bios menu, that weren't present with the old video card.

I have this problem as well. Brand new MSI R9 290 Gaming 4G. After driver install, I get a black screen after the windows logo comes up during boot. I've tried the beta 14.1 and 13.12 drivers. They both do the same thing. Even did a OS reinstall both times.

Anyone got a fix?

Following on from issues above, I returned the Gigabyte R9 290 to the shop and got it replaced. (They tested it in front of me, and issued an RMA on the spot. Got to love Scorptec)
The replacement card has had no blackscreen issues, or system freezes. The System bios is back to normal too.
I did have a few BSOD's, but the system seems to have stabilized since. Only running 13.12 drivers, without the control center UI.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I've literally done almost everything I can think of and the remedies online and I guess I'm going to exchange the card as well. The only problem is that they're out of stock and I've been waiting forever for this 🙁. The wait continues then...

Go to Device Manger, display adapters, back click videos card, update, browse my computer, Let me pick, click on the msi r9 290 series, click next. It applies the driver throw windows.

I'm running win 8.1 and I have an Asus 290x CU2OC

Greetings. I also had a similar issue with my r9 290. I've just found the solution which worked for me. I hope it will save someone a lot of hassle like I had :)

symptoms:
Screen goes in to no signal mode after latest amd driver is installed (catalyst 14.4, 14.6 beta). This also happens after system is rebooted back to Windows.

about the issue:
I am certain that my problem was not caused by hardware failure because I never experienced this problem before I installed catalyst 14.4 stable or 14.6 beta. AMD says that this issue was caused by AHCI driver which they've removed However in my case this did not help. I was able to revert the system back to 13.12 by booting in to safe mode removing the 14.4. Form there my gpu was working perfectly like it was before. Well that might be ok for somebody but not for me i was slightly annoyed with 500 euro GPU running on outdated driver so tried remoting on to my system using a team viewer and i found out that the resolution is locked to 640*480 which gave me the conclusion something was wrong with the catalyst control centre

my specs:
mobo: Gigabite 970A DS3
GPU: Sapphire R9 290
CPU : AMD FX Vishera 6350
RAM: 8gb 2*4gb
PSU: OCZ ZS series 750W
OS: Win 8.1 64

my resolution:

Uninstall amd drivers using the Display Driver Uninstaller program in safe mode.

start the driver installation and under installation type go for custom

Install just the driver. some options are mandatory dont worry about those. After the installation is done reboot

Now install remaining items except for catalyst control center. as per screen shot. again don't worry about mandatory stuff. after the installation is done reboot again

install catalyst control center it should work fine ....

I hope this will help

Hi there.

I just got my brand new Graphic Card r9 920 windforce and havet the same problem.. nothing can help me. I think that this whole serie is just messed up and this problem should be more loud becouse people should know what do they buy. I hope that i could bring it back and buy nvdidia geforce gtx 780. this was always the best choice but radeon had better score in benchmarks or games test than nvidia.

anyway, in my opinion radeon isnt worth its price. 1500 zl (~$500) for graphic card which dont even work ? are you kidding me ?

Hey there,

I too have this problem, bought R9 290 Tri-X OC few months ago and found out that installing 14.X drivers are pain the arse. Either it shows me black screen after Windows logo or it'll just straight giving me the black face in the middle of installation. So far 13.12 is the sweet spot for me now.. just hoping that AMD solves this problem as soon as possible or I'll just jump back to the greens on my next card.

P/S: I'm not good at English

Hi,
Got this problem and this is what works for me:
Unmount the GPU completely and remove it from the case, then mount it back. I know it sound ridiculous but after I reinstall the card it boot with no problem. I didnt have to reinstall the driver because it was already installed.

Glad to hear that you're able to bypass the black screen issue. Unfortunately for me, the card I'm using now are forever plague with the black screen issue, black screen after Windows logo is one thing but black screen in a middle of the installation? That's a paddlin..

Anyway.. gonna send it back for RMA by the end of this month. Hope that I can get a Vapor-X edition as replacement due to Tri-X stock were cut off or something. *finger-cross*

I have the same exact card with the same exact issue, I have not get rid of the problem yet, but a temporary fix is replugging HDMI cable, then black screen should disappear.

Having the same problem

I just got from XFX R9 280X Black OC Edition, since my 7970 Black Edition was dead, they gave me the new GPU. So I am running windows 8.1 fully up to date, and before I installed the new card, I removed the old drivers, and shut down the unit put the new one in, with new drivers.

So now, when I play "World of Tanks" or a other game, when I get right into it, Black Screen. But dropping from MAX settings to High, I lasted 5 mins, so a bit longer.

Someone told me, look at "EventViewer" and few of them are saying Kernel-PNP, Kernel-power Service control manager, Application error, DistributedCOM, Have no idea what most of it means. I just had no problems intill I put this new damn card. Would a format fixs it? still not sure what's going on but I left it over night watching blu-ray movies and came back 10 hours later, works fine.

Never has this problem with my 7970 at all. but here is my rig

CPU: FX 8350
MB: Sabertooth 990FX 1st gen (BIOS fully up to date)
RAM: G.Skills 2 sticks 4GB each and at 1600 but low volt
SSD: Samsung 128Gb Pro
HDD: 1TB WD Black
PSU Corsair AX850 Gold
Networking Card: Killer 2100
SoundBlaster Card: ZX
CPU Cooler: Corsair H80i liquid cooling
Antec 1200 Case with 5 120mm LED fans and one 200mm with LCD fan contorler.
