I just get a black screen after the windows-logo.

my specs:
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z87-HD3
GPU: Gigabyte Radeon R9 290
CPU: Intel i5-4670k
RAM: A-DATA 8gb (2x4gb)
PSU: be quiet! 600W 80+ Gold
HDD: 1TB Seagate desktop SSHD

I did send in the GPU and there's no hardware error in it. I've tried reinstalling windows 7, downloading all updates, installing all mobo-updates, flashing the BIOS, using Display Driver Uninstaller before retrying to install the GPU-drivers. But whatever I do i still get that damn black screen after installing the GPU-drivers.

The latest thing I tried was disabling the onboard graphics in BIOS, this will also make windows not start. So I'm guessing that windows 7 is using onboard graphics through my r9 290? Or maybe it believes that the r9 290 is the onboard gpu? I don't know, I have huge gaps in my knowledge about computers. Anyone know what I should do next?

I had the same problem like topic starter. I have Radion HD7850 and Intel HD4000 (integrated to processor)
This is my solution:
- flash the BIOS to default settings
- reinstall graphic drivers (i have reinstall driver just for Intel integrated graphic - it was enough for problem resolution)
- if you using 2 monitors - first connected to integrated card, second on discrete - you need to set in BIOS Advanced -> System Agent Configuration -> Graphic Configuration -> iGPU Multi-Monitor to Enabled

Possible solution:
- set in BIOS Advanced -> System Agent Configuration -> Graphic Configuration -> Primary Display to pci bus in which you display connected to.

I7 4770
Asus hero 6
24 gb patriot ram
850 w hs ultra bronze psu
270x radeon 4 gig x2 ( x-fire )
5450hd 1 gddr3 for wacom board

Had same problem. Black screen could alt+ctrl+del to task manager but still had black screen rebooted. No amd drivers installed. Reboooted again. Righted itself.
Simple fix. Seems to happen once a week. Waiting for new drivers. Id say roll back or wait. Its not to pressing to me.

Good luck

Brand new A88XM-PLUS MB, one lcd in VGA, one in DVI... first dvi lcd worked but not vga, then updated drivers, then vga worked but not dvi. and by not work, I mean then both show up in bios, right through to windows 8 'please wait' or 'loading' screen (whatever it its). then when it gets to logging on, one screen goes black. (cable connected, but no signal). wtf right? finally after reading this, I plugged dvi cable into hdmi->dvi converter and plugged dvi monitor into hdmi output of MB, now everything works. So, could be a hdcp thing or cable thing... I don't care really... both panels are working now so I'm moving on to getting some work done. thank you for the help everyone and good luck everyone,

Hello! i bought asus radeon r9 290, before few days, same issues black screens...
My system:
win7 x64
asus mb p8 z68-v pro gen3
intel cpu i5-2320 3.00 ghz
g-skill ram 8g 12800
psu coolermaster g750m 80+ bronze
display drivers: the newest 14.12 omega

i tried everything i googled without luck(drivers, tweaks..))! Today i had an idea to try it in my tv. So my monitor is connected through dvi and my tv through hdmi, right click on desktop>screen resolution and changed multiple displays to ''duplicate these displays''(monitor and tv).
so i tried it with a game called 'state of decay' which i had blackscreens every second(my screen was coming back when i was hitting escape), and viola, my monitor had again the same blackscreens but my tv was running smoothly without even 1 blackscreen. So i dont know if the problem is the monitor or the dvi cable(some expert could help)

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if anyone else has posted this as I'm at work and don't have time to read the whole thread. This has worked for me recently trying to install the new AMD drivers on Windows 8.1 and Windows 7

1. Boot into 'Safe Mode' - start - control panel - Hardware and Sound - Device Manager.
2. Select the drop-down for display adapters and disable/uninstall the integrated graphics adapter (Intel HD 4000 or something like that)
3. Install AMD drivers using Custom and only select the Control centre and the driver itself.

If you still have worries after this, use the driver sweeper tool and run through this again.

Got a Sapphire R9 270 2GB, BOOST, OC with the same issues. I got it running once for 2-3 minutes of gaming and never again. I can uninstall it from Device Manager and as soon as I install the Display drivers BSOD. Remove the card, boot using Intel HD 4400 and the system works fine. Even using MS default drivers I get artifacts (white lines when I move the mouse around).

Funny, cause I was going for a cheap GPU upgrade at 150USD, ended up replacing mobo, CPU, RAM and PSU at around 600USD and wasted a good 50 hours troubleshooting and that last part isn't cheap.

What upsets me the most, isn't the BSOD, but the fact that during the 20 years I've built computers, things have not improved. Secondly the debugging tools suck. If the GPU freezes there is no reason for the computer to freeze, it could still write logs to HDD. Since you can get BSOD, what a stupid idea of Microsoft to have a black screen between Windows logo and login? Why not keep the animation alive all the time or TAB into console printouts as in Linux? IS there no-one left asking the "what-if"?

What solved it for me:

Used Display Driver Uninstaller while in Safe Mode
Downloaded the 13.12 drivers for my OS
Installed custom, with only the drivers selected

Hope it helps somebody.

So this was possibly the most infuriating computer problem I've ever had because the problem seemed to make no sense and neither did my ultimate resolution for it.

NOTE: I HAVE A DUAL MONITOR SET UP. I DID NOT TEST THIS WITH A SINGLE MONITOR, BUT IT MIGHT WORK FOR YOU

I tried every solution recommended in this thread and any other thread I could find on the topic. Absolutely nothing worked. The only headway I could make was by going into windows safe mode, uninstalling my video card (R9 290) through device manager, then using a driver cleaner, rebooting, and reinstalling ONLY the AMD display driver (not installing anything else). Reboot, then my computer worked normally. "Hooray!" I thought. It's fixed!

Nope, this would only temporarily solve the problem until I rebooted. Upon rebooting my computer, I would be back to square one with a loss of signal to the display after the windows 7 logo loaded.

MY SOLUTION: I have no idea why this worked, or even what possessed my to try this, but I switched the ports my monitors were connected to on my graphics card. This completely 100% solved my problem. I'm not kidding you, I was about ready to return my video card and buy an 970 from nvidia. But simply swapping where I had my monitors plugged fixed the problem.

IF YOU HAVE A SINGLE MONITOR: Try plugging it into a different output on your video card.

I did recently unplug both monitors to move the computer, and the black screen problem showed up shortly after I set my computer back up again. Perhaps I inadvertently switched where I had my monitors plugged in back then. Either way, it doesn't make any damn sense, but that's computers for you. I hope this helps someone in this thread because I have been trying to solve this for two weeks and was literally at my wit's end.

Yes, i was pulling my hair out with this problem.

And in my case it was the hdmi cable as well. I pulled all my cables out and back in still i would see a black screen thought, then i checked my samsung led tv i sometimes use it for movies, and well o well do i feel emberrassed, the login screen was on that screen!! it wasnt the driver, it wasnt hardware, the login screen switched to the other screen... i feel very dumb! but look at your other monitors and cables!

I HAVE FIXED IT!!!

I have been trying to fix this for like 6 months, I couldn't update the driver non of the fixes did not work. But here is a easy solution:

- Uninstall the driver.
- Open device manager and right click on the gpu's name and click update. (Display Adapters)
- Write msconfig in the search box and open. In services there is AMD External Events Utility. Just disable it and click apply.
- Then restart the computer.

DO NOT RESTART BEFORE FINISHING ALL OF THE STEPS

I hope i helped somebody because this made me mad for like 6 months. Sorry for bad English :))
