[SOLVED] BlackSOD win new build - GTX 1660 TI driver issue?

I recently built a computer for a friend, for his kid's X-Mas present, and it has been plagued with BlackSOD almost from the beginning.

MSI Tommohawk B450 (running latest BIOS)
Ryzen 5 3600
EVGA 1660 TI SC

Symptom: Before windows fully boots, screen goes black. Repeated reboots get you to the "windows is repairing itself" screen, after which time, I can get in via safe mode. Repair attempts fail.

Once in safe mode, I ran DDU and cleaned off all graphics drivers. Rebooted. Installed latest Nvidia driver (no other Nvidia software/drivers). rebooted. BSOD

Tried again, but this time ran DDU then installed driver one back from most current. Rebooted. Worked fine. Rebooted. Worked fine. Ran COD....seemed fine. Rebooted. Worked fine. Turned off PSU...waited 10 seconds or so...turned back on, BSOD.

I should mention that we've already RMAd the card once, thinking that was the problem. It wasn't.

Have you run live update 6 to make sure rest of motherboard drivers are up to date?

Have you tried running DDU and instead of using drivers direct from Nvidia, run windows update instead and use the older Nvidia drivers Microsoft still have. Might be more stable.

Understood, however, I'd like to get to the reason for the issue so that I don't have to live in fear of a future reboot causing issues.

Yes, I believe that everything in MSI's updater is current.

I don't believe so. If we determine that the Nvidia drivers are the issue, I'll try that at some point.

As an update, it is currently stable now. I have zero confidence in it staying that way. The next windows update is liable to mess it all up again....I'd still like some feedback on the dumps if possible.

It appears you have the latest BIOS already installed.

Windows update would only mess it up if it included an updated version of the Nvidia driver, and MS are slow, they don't rush into these things.

well, that error is clearly the drivers you had. A lot of the times Nvidia hides itself but its right in your face there.

Nvidia drivers have been suspect to me since at least October. I generally tell people to use WIndows Update as most of the time you get older drivers that work. Eventually MS will have to update those and we will get this all again from the default drivers. Gardenman already has issues with them., but then his GPU is old. I feel trying to support everything from a 770 to a 2080 is pushing it. AMD have 2 different driver families for old/new cards. Old gets very little support but what do you expect if card is over 5 years old?

Thanks for the input guys. Glad to see that my suspicion of it being graphics driver-related appears to be correct. It's been up and running now for several days without issue, so I'll continue to monitor it.
