I guess what it all comes down to is the fact that the average gamer does not and will not spend hundreds of hours on the same game. The shame of it all is that hundreds of hours in this game can still get you pretty much nowhere. They need to sit down and figure out how much "effort" and player needs to put into this game to be able to feel like they are "getting somewhere".
Right now you can't "win". You couldn't "win" on diablo 2 either but you always really felt like you were making progress even if you didn't have a crazy strong character. You could make a cheap necromancer that could pretty much solo anything through most if not all of the game and if you found a few decent/good items then you were set. In 40 hours the legit player who didnt know about or couldn't "grush" or regular rush through the game could be in hell and really feel like the time invested so far was worthwhile.
In diablo 3 almost all of the average players time feels wasted as they get wrecked time and time again in hell or inferno. Diablo 3 was designed to me "more of the same" in relation to Diablo 2 but they did it worse. They failed on the few cool things they promised like "random maps" which aren't random. They KILLED the social system of the game. They put out a rushed product which is just sad considering they worked on this for over 7 years (they started from scratch in 2005) and the project has been going on for over 10 years now.
For the players who can and want to spend thousands of hours/dollars this is a great game. For those of us who won't or really can't then D3 was a big let down.
