Hi,
I wish to block the use of kazaa and other PtP file sharing programs on my home network. The current set up is 4 computers connected via a router to broadband internet. I have looked in the broadband setup, and blocked port 1214, but it seems that the newer versions of kazaa can tunnel through port 80. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can stop this?
Many thanks

it's pretty tough and it's not do-able with just a router.

Check <A HREF="http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=1242550" target="_new">this thread</A> for some good info.

LMAO yeah that kinda might help, basically you need to just simply install a software firewall that controlls in/out bound net access.. Zonealarm as mentioned above is a great app, i prefer Panda Platinum 7, it's an Amazing anti virus app (imo BLOWS away nortons) and also has an AWESOME firewall, i think it works better then zone alarm.

Good luck.

Asus A7N8X Deluxe
80gb Maxtor
200gb WD 8mb cache..
Lian-Li PC-60
LiteOn 52X/LiteOn 811s DVD-RW
AMD XP2800+
LeadTek GF4Ti4200 128mb
Hitachi CML174
1GB Corsair XMS PC3200

Block port 1214 and it will stop Kazzaa.

yeah another option is to just connect to kazaa and run netstat, see what it's running and block.. basically what the post above says.

If Kazaa is the issue, just uninstall it.

Unless your willing to purchase a router over $3000 or build your own router, you can't block it at the router. You can slow it down at the router.

DO as many of the following as you can.

Block the following Domains in your URL filter
gnutella.com
morpheus.com
kazaa.com
filetopia.org
limewire.com
shareaza.com
bittorrent.com

Now you can block the following ports both in and out TCP/IP and UDP

411-413
1214
2323
3531
4242
4661-4672
5555
6257
6345-6348
6667
6699
7778

However a better method is if you can rate limit these ports you can really have fun. Rate limiting these ports to say 1kbps will allow P2P programs to connect on the following ports but is likely to really annoy the guy in your network who is trying to download anything using a P2P

1 Meg download will be 136 minutes long. That and most file sharing networks are optimised to give priority to users with great bandwidth. No bandwith no priority but since they CAN connect but can't download your problems are minimized.

This is just one method of controling a network when examineing each computer is not an option.

You're right mack ... :)

How easy is it to "rate limit" and can you explain (or link to) what it does?

Also, does port blocking disturb other traffic and what about other p2p prgrams?

I've heard many (some) can use the normal web surfing ports, or even disguise it self as web surf traffic...

Also, some use encrypting the data traffic, so you cant block it because the router can not identify classify the data...? Or does that only apply for "next gen" p2p protocols?

thanx

Port blocking turns a port off - anything that uses that port will cease function outside the network.

Rate Limit, commonly known as Quality of Service within Windows. Do a google on that and it should come up with some directions on how to install and limit certain things by PC or Proxy.

The internet is port 80.. you can't block that.. spyware can use that port, adware, etc. You need a 3rd party program basically to check for this stuff and remove it.
