Question blu ray drive

I am trying to use a 5.25 " pioneer. Bd blu ray writer that was meant for a tower case ,to use for my laptop.i bought a sata 3 to USB adapter which is meant for hdds. It will recognise it as a mass storage device but not as a drive I need to access some data discs

You'll likely need the power adapter for it to work with the optical drive as it will need more power than the USB can provide.

I am using a power adapter that plugs into the back of the sata3\usb adapter
