Blu-Ray Gains, HD-DVD Fades

Blu-ray wins two more backers, while HD DVD looks doomed

Lions Gate Home Entertainment (LGHE), a division of Lions Gate
Entertainment (NYSE: LGF; Toronto), announced today that it will
release content on the new high definition Blu-ray Disc format. As part
of its cooperation with the Blu-ray Disc Association, LGHE will begin
releasing new films, TV programming and other titles from the company's
vast library in that format when Blu-ray hardware launches in North
America.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox, and Buena
Vista Home Entertainment (Disney) were all previously on board.
Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures has put their HD DVD plans on hold, and
NBC Universal has scaled back their release plans for the holiday.
Among the big hitters in the computing industry, Apple, Dell, Sony
(obviously), HP, and Philips (among others) remain committed to
Blu-ray. HD DVD's backing is considerably weaker, although Microsoft's
role in HD DVD remains unclear. Warner Brothers, New Line Cinema, and
Universal Pictures are still officially supporting HD DVD. For now.

It is an INCREDIBLY SLOW time of year when someone goes off and says
how one next generation of DVD is better than another, just
coincidentaly the position favoring Sony.

So, again, the question remains: Was Blig released by Sony on the
world, or did he escape on his own?

support while the small support the HD-DVD had is actually decreasing
and getting smaller, with the few big supporters actually backpedaling
now. There is no reason to get upset. Oh wait. You are an xflop

Well, here ya go. Proof positive you have so little of a life, that
you have an obsession over the format next generation consoles will be
in, in addition to how people spell their name. Well, Bilg Mrek, who
gives a flying iota. Next gen is going to be won or lost on marketing,
titles, and distribution of systems. End of story, not whether or not
it will play the small sliver of new movies coming out in a new format.

So, Bilg Mrek, you do need to SERIOUSLY get a life. You do.

If Blu-ray and HD-DVD do end up using HDCP, I guess it'll piss off people
who bought their HDTVs in the window between the introduction of DVI and the
introduction of HDCP. (Un)luckily my "ancient" 2002 HDTV uses component
inputs and not HDMI (or even DVI -- I jumped the gun with my purchase by
about six months), so like you said, in my case it's all moot anyway. I
think a TV upgrade is in my future sometime in the next year or so anyway.

So even though my HDTV has a DVI input it may not be HDCP compatible?

You'd be in the minority of proud owners of a HDTV that then find out their
new HD XBox/PS3 doesn't give them HD quality from those movies. Boo hoo
hoo....

Yes, that's true. You probably need to just check your owner's manual, or
post your model number and someone might know. So far, I don't think the
computer monitors have it at all, for the most part.

You conveniently snipped out the "*if* HD-DVD and Blu-ray adopt HDCP" part.
It's likely but there's been no firm decision yet AFAIK. Yet another sign
that the whole high-def DVD market is still in its infancy.

Few? I haven't looked into this, but I know the model of my TV that came out
in 2003 already supported HDCP. And pretty much any HDTV you buy today will
as well.

Um, they're GAMES machines first and foremost. The Xbox 360 (and the PS3)
will output up to 1080i resolution to any HDTV or computer monitor. How is
not doing high-def resolutions for games at all (ie. Revolution) supposed to
be better than that?

Hey retard, the Xbox 360 isn't a high-def movie player. And first you're

Component will be perfect for the Xbox 360, because it's a high-defintion
GAMES machine and a progressive scan DVD player. Component is all you need,
DUH. It's not high-def GAMES that are going to be subject to DRM.

If Blu-ray uses HDCP *and* has a decent amount of studio backing by the time
the PS3 comes out *and* I actually feel it necessary to own a high-def
version of The Lion King 3, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it in a
year or whenever. Like I said, I'm due for a TV upgrade anyway. But some
people might not be quite as understanding when they find out the PS3 won't
play high-def movies on their HDTVs.

been buying them enmase. Most sets out there aren't HDCP.

So there's gonna be a THIRD version of the 360?? Any word on the price
for this one? $599? Do you think they'll still follow through after
HD-DVD bombs? I mean, HD-DVD is really only one or two movie studios
away from being a non-entity.
