Hello. I own an i7 4790K, and i'm looking for more horsepower on a single core. Current turbo boost the cpu from 4.0Ghz to 4.4Ghz, but i was looking at something like 4.5-4.7Ghz, while the rest of the cores stay at 4.0/4.2(turbo) or less depending on load.

Is that even possible? I do not want a 24/7 4.7Ghz, just the turbo boost.

Solution

Yea you can OC some stuff like the G3258 but the H81 (as far as my knowledge...
i do not believe that this is possible in the same way that turbo boost does it, but you should be able to set it to adaptive mode which will downclock and lower voltages when the cpu isnt being used 😛

If you OC your CPU then all cores will be OCd. But if there isn't any load on the CPU it goes to like 1.6, 1.7Ghz anyway. So no matter how much you OC, the CPU will still downclock if there isn't any load. But you can't only OC specific cores.

I myself have an ASUS Mobo, but on H81 Chipset. H81 Gamer. I will check if that has selective turbo and will be back with info

Ohhh you got a H81. Okay, then you can forget overclocking your CPU. H seires motherboards don't support any OCing. You'll need to get a Z97 board to OC your 4790k in any way.

Hmm, i do have an overclocking tab, i'll check that out. Maybe because it's a better H81 Board it does support it. I am not very well documented about overclocking, but i'm trying to learn since i bought an unlocked CPU.

Yea you can OC some stuff like the G3258 but the H81 (as far as my knowledge goes) don't support OCing on Devil Cranyon CPUs like the 4790k.
It needs to be placed in a Z97 board.

For OCing it goes like that:
Locked CPU = H board
Unlocked CPU = Z board.

Solution
Then i guess i can return the board and get a Z97 one, from ASUS. I have found the Per-Core Ratio settings in BIOS on the H81, but i don't want to fry anything. It had the options (Auto (my setting)-Sync Cores-Manual).
On manual i had to insert ratios for 1 core, 2 cores,3 and 4 cores respectivley.

Still, a Z97 would be better since it has more SATA ports, and i badly needed those,
Thanks For the help.
