Boot problems with a pre owned gateway laptop

I just purchased a laoptop from a friend that worked great until I got it, I turned it on and then it took ages before the gateway logo came up......then after that it says "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press anykey"
I dont have any discs and I have no clue hoe to proceed please advise

You probably need to purchase your own OS license. And possibly a new hard drive.
