Bootable Ubuntu USB

Hi guys, I was following a guide on http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/14912/create-a-persistent-bootable-ubuntu-usb-flash-drive/ to create a persistant bootable ubuntu usb drive (using Universal USB Installer). However when I bott into the usb instead of giving me the options to boot into ubuntu etc it only has "try without installing", "instal" etc and isn't a peristant bootable usb. Could someone please offer some advice on how to fix it/create the bootable drive.

Tried it again and I have the same issue, once rufus has done it's stuff do I have to do anything on the drive or should it just work?

Rufus will make it bootable. It'll format the flash drive after you add the ISO. Reboot after change the bootdisk to it, then boot from it

I used rufus then when I rebooted from the usb the only options that came up were to install ubuntu or preview it. The operating system itself wasn't installed on the drive to run from.

Oh no it wont do that. It only installs the install files on it not the OS on the flash drive

According to the site the one you used should have worked. I'll test it here and see if it works

Thank you very much, I'm just looking for a tool to use for troubleshooting purposes etc.

Yup that only extracts the ISO so you can install from it. You wont get into the OS with it

Only one I think that'll work is the Windows to go option in Rufus. BUT it says since a flash drive isnt fixed it may not boot anyway

There are smaller distros that SHOULD work. Puppy linux , Damn small linux which is about 50 mb, crunchbang

You can boot into the OS with these distros

Ubuntu is too big, one reason you wont get it installed on a flash drive. It doesn't support it either. But the above 3 do so it says

Rufus can deal with Linux ISO's too.

I tried damn small linux it booted from the flash drive. But didnt recognise my wireless adapter. So that was the end of that
