I recently upgraded to the Asus RTX 4070 Super from the 1660 Ti but the problem is that my CPU can't keep up with it. I have an Intel i5-9400 along with an Asus Rog Maximus XI mobo, and with the new market and so much scope for upgrades I dont know what to get since I'm going to need a new CPU and mobo.

Also, I'm not even getting the full potential out of my GPU since I'm on a PCIe gen 3 and i think its only x8 so I just need some advice on what's good. I don't have a preference on platform, but I have a decently limiting budget but not absurd.

I hope i gave all the information needed and I hope you guys can help, thanks!

8-thread 9700k isn't too far behind 16-thread 13700k at 1440p

I would check to see how close to those numbers you get with your 6-core 9400 before considering an upgrade. But somebody on eBay has a new 9700k up for $82.49 right now.
Many people suggest 6-core CPUs do fine with a 4070 but those are usually 12-threads, and only i9 in 9th gen has hyperthreading

i play 1080p but it looks as though the results are roughly the same thank you for the advice ill look into it

the i7 is reasonably priced for 82. The other routes you can go on a budget would be a socket am4 ryzen setup or you could pick up an LGA 1700 series board that accepts ddr4 and go with an Intel 12600k or kf for not a lot of money and still be able to update to a 14th generation part.

If you have a little more money consider a socket am5 ryzen system but that would mean swapping to ddr5 as well adding a bit more expense.

thanks ill consider all these as they are both viable options ill just see what deals i can get along with value

Just trying to look for a good deal and right now there are a couple cpus i am looking at becasue put quite simply my cpu currently is not keeping up witht he rest of my pc, i play on 1080p hopefully upgrading that soon too, but i have a 4070 super and an i5 9400, there is a little bit of a difference there im sure many of you can see and im unsure what upgrade path to take, my most prominent options right now are the i5 12600kf, i7 9700k, 10700k, or some amd probably like a 7600x. out of those picks what would in theory at least get me the most performance out of my pc, as well as best price for performance.

Of those I’d go with the amd ryzen 5 7600x. The 9700k and 10700k are out of date. The 12600kf is reasonable but the thing is, yes you’d have options to upgrade to Intel 14th generation, there were issues Intel had with some 13th and 14th generation CPUs dying. Intel claims those issues have been fixed but who knows? Seeing as they’ve moved on to an entirely new socket.

With the 7600x you would be on socket am5 which AMD has said they would support through 2025. So the nice thing is you could start with a decent b650 board. The cost of ddr5 is higher than ddr4 but has come down quite a bit. And with socket am5 being supported 2 more years, if you decided to update later to a higher end cpu, it should be a bios update and drop in the newer processor.

ive also been looking into some of the x3d cpus do you think any of those are viable options?

Only you know how high up the perf ladder you want to go and how fat your wallet is.

Gpu.....I doubt you would see any diff between a gen 3 x 16 and a gen 4 x 16 slot.

your cheapest option would have a cpu upgrade. to an i7/i9 on the 9th gen your on.. (2nd hand from ebay).
if you have a low budget and want to change you could go Ryzen. and get an AM4 cpu and motherboard combo cheap on ebay, amazon, or other options in your country. then you can keep the DDR4 ram you have same money..
if you have extra money for a build. and with january sales on sites you could go AM5. get a cheap motherboard and cpu combo.. and 2 paired stick of 8gb ram.. ( go for ryzen 5 7500f or better)....**** avoid the ryzen 5 "8000" series. they cripple the pcie 4. card down to x4 or x8..

right now my biggest consideration is the i5 12600kf due to it being on a platform that i can still get ddr4 memory on as well as being able to upgrade to 13th and 14th gen if they ever become more stable and it seems like a good option, as well as not having to switch cpu platforms and just generally being able to find it and a motherboard for a good price most everywhere

that is logical. just remember that 13/14 gen use DDR5 ram if i remember correctly. also that i5 12600kf.. might need a good "cooler/aio" if you overclock it..
the best thing to do is search sites/places selling combos. that you think are suitable and find the best 1 to suit your needs and price.

thanks man and i have a pretty decent aio thats definitely one nest on my list though and i dont plan on doing much overclocking as long as i get the performance i need out of it and any recomendations for sites? all i know to look on right now is ebay for second hand, newegg for sometimes good deals and baseline price, and amazon just in case

your welcome. depending on your location(country), you have ebay, amazon, newegg, ebuyer, micro centre, facebook marketplace.

me personally(in uk), i use ebay for 2nd hand motherboards and cpu,) C.E.X (for cpu and ram). for new motherboards i sue amazon, and CCL computers. .. im also lucky my friend owns local computer shop so i get stuff there. sometimes. .

i saw on ARK (intels site that the i5 12600kf can use dd4 3200 or ddr5 4800 , so you have a few options . get a 12/13/14 gen motherboard that takes ddr5 and futureproof your build for a few years. if will add some money to you have to but some ddr5 ram,, or you would have to but a board that takes ddr4 and ddr5 (but they normally cost more .

really depends on your cash flow and what your trying to salvage.

if its a quite motherboard and cpu swap will retaining ddr4

you may want to look at am4 b550 which will still offer you 5700x3d make your old ram usable and give you access to gen x4 pci

and

faster nvme storage 4.0

that is actually what i was thinking its not wroth it to buy such an upgrade without future-proofing it so im definitely gonna do ddr5 just so i can make sure i dont have to buy a new motherboard again
