Hello,

I was looking around for a development system, for writing/testing a spot of code for multiprocessor systems (w2k3), speed isn't important but is always a bit of a bonus

I do however need more than 4GB of ram again for testing reasons (and it would be nice to run a 64bit operating system from time to time for testing too).

So what would you all go for Xeon, Opteron ?

Price is a big consideration...

Dave,

Today, there really isn't any choice. Maybe Intel will be competative with thier merom derivitive, but right now, Opteron is the only choice.
And it's a lot better at 64bit anyhow.

Nice board should do everything i need,

Aren't 242's single core? or have i missunderstood again?
but they do look good pwr/£ ,
Don't i need the 265s for the dual core (twice the price mind), but 6gb is going to cost a fair bit anyway.....

Dave,

IIRC

242
244
246
248
250
252
254

= SINGLE CORE

260
265
270
275
280
285

= DUAL CORE

I would recommend a Tyan S2895ANRF

Supports 16GB RAM (8 slots) recommended config 2 sticks / CPU 4 sticks total.

Also supports SLI

If you do not need high end graphics then a server board might be a better choice some Tyan server boards support up to 64GB RAM and have 16 DIMM slots.
