Hey all!

I bought a used GeForce® GTX 1080 WINDFORCE OC 8G from my friend and before we shook hands he let me take it home to test it to make sure it worked. It was incredibly caked up and dusty so I gave it a thorough clean and left the original factory pads on it (which where a bit dirty but not too bad). I didn't want to give it a full detail and change everything if the card isn't even working so I did the bare minimum to see if it runs.

Anyways I plugged it in and all seems to be going well. I ran a benchmark and just wanted to check with you guys if everything is okay.

Mind you these are the temps etc are with the old thermal pads and only thermal paste changed. In 30 minutes the max it hit was 66c.

Thank you <3

P.S Will update with new pads.

I tend to take an opposite tact when it comes to factory installed components (of a build). If the pads were there, they were put there for a reason. I have no experience with a card not needing or not having (if you catch my drift) but personally would consider putting new pads in place of the old ones if the manufacturer considered they needed to be there. YMMV

The relayed temps are fine.

Pascal cards are very efficient. If you aren't even getting up to the 83C / 73C throttle point, everything is fine.

It was after that Nvidia really started cranking up the wattage and CUDA core count.

Hey all! thank you very much for the responses but the pads look like they have been through war. They are mostly torn and with a lot of dust and cake on them. If they looked fine I would leave them but the previous owner put them through hell it seems. I think for general future and health of the card going forward It would be a good idea to change them.

That way I never have to worry about them again because I know for certain the paste and pads are brand new. If anything where to happen. I guess more of a tick to cross of my mind going forward and in the future. Seeing as the card is 8 years old as well.

Thank you.

Just a small update for future wonderers. I changed thermal pads to Amazon's assorted pads and thermal paste to Arctic mx 4 and I got much lower lows on temp and hotspot, almost 10c lower at 24c and the maximums where basically the same +- 0.5c to 1c considering it's slightly hotter day on the new temp test.

But also great because it was my first time ever disassembling a GPU, changing paste and pads.

Id call this a great success!
