Broken K8 Heatsink Mount

AMD 3200 K8 on a Gigabyte K8VT800M motherboard. One of the "ears" on the
black frame mounted to the MB that the heatsink mounts to has broken. The
Heatsink is stock.

I haven't found a source for a new mounting frame, I think I've got to by an
aftermarket heatsink with a different mounting system to be able to put this
back together (since the frame is usually bundled with the motherboard,
aftermarket heatsinks that use "stock" mounting don't supply the frame).
Granted, a nice Zalman will probably do a better job cooling, but I hate to
spend $50 when all I really need is a $0.99 piece of plastic.

Does anyone know of a source for these things?

Thanks!

I belive that you are talking about the CPU socket. That is not exactly
replaceable.

Unfortunately that usually means replace the MB.

No, it's not the CPU socket. There is a picture here:

http://www.epinions.com/pr-Gigabyte_Socket_754_Athlon_64_A_L_MATX_Motherboards_Motherboard

It's a black plastic frame that surrounds (but isn't connected to) the CPU
socket.

Usually, these things are shipped with the motherboard. As I mentioned, I
think that any aftermarket heatsink that requires a more substantial
mounting (and is compatible with socket 754 motherboards) would solve my
problem since it would have it's own mounting bracket, but those that are
made to use the stock mounting method wouldn't work since they don't ship
with the bracket, you're supposed to use the one you already have.

BTW, I have already posted a request with Gigabyte, but I was hoping to find
an alternate source and save the 24-hour response time from them, and
obligatory 3 email exchanges to get them to understand what I really need.

Thx,

Tuner

you might try here among other places,
http://ggts.gigabyte.com.tw/tech.asp?product=Motherboard&Country=USA
http://ggts.gigabyte.com.tw/nontech.asp
1-626-854-9338 U.S.A. G.B.T. INC.
.... or just email them.

Thanks for the phone number, kony. Unfortunately, it's a fax line.

I've already posted a message with the Gigabyte site, but I was hoping to
save the 24-hour response time and obligatory 3-roudns of email before they
understand my question.

I think I'll end up ordering a Zalman from newegg. I bet it's on my
doorstep before I hear back from Gigabyte.

Thx,

Oops, your number was right, I dialed 9339, which is the fax line. Sorry!

Good call, kony. I called them, apparently this is a known problem with
this board, they are sending me another one gratis.

Also good call, pino. Once I googled using the correct name of "retention
bracket", I found

http://www.evertek.com/viewpart.asp?auto=12355

but I'll settle on the free one from Gigabyte.

Thanks!

I think that thing is called "retention bracket" so you can try to google
it, maybe someone is selling them separately

on some motherboards when you install zalman cnps7000 that thing is replaced
by two metal posts so if you know someone that installed zalman you can ask
them do they have any leftovers 🙂)
