I played BS1 when it originally came out (called Circle of Blood here
in US) and gave it up midway out of boredom and also frustration of
its inane timing sequences. I remember, I gave the game to someone for
free through these newsgroups.
At the time, there was some choice available in the genre and so I
could afford to do that.
I only revisited BS1, after I tried BS3 demo. I liked it and wanted to
play the earlier two games in the series. Also, the genre had somewhat
dried up, so I didn't have the luxury to throw away half decent games.
In my second run through the game, I still found the timed action
sequences annoying and the overall gameplay too linear and
restrictive. Broken Sword 2 was somewhat worse, with quite an idiotic
plot and very strange puzzles. The game seemed unfinished.
In comparison, Broken Sword 3 is completely out of league of the
earlier two games. The puzzles and the plot elements make sense for
the most part (within its game world) and the graphics and voice
acting are quite good. I even liked the interface. The timed sequences
were lot less frustrating and easier to handle than those in Broken
Sword 1 & 2.
If I have to grade the series, I'd say
Broken Sword 1, 6/10
Broken Sword 2, 4/10
Broken Sword 3, 8-/10
To compare this with Gabriel Knight,
Gabriel Knight 1, 10+/10
Gabriel Knight 2, 9-/10
Gabriel Knight 3, 8+/10

I liked its interface a lot (much better than the regular
pixel-hunting one) and also its overall production values. A lot of
people complained about the 'moving boxes' puzzles so I am sure guys
at Revolution will listen. Except for that, I hope they keep every
thing the same as Broken Sword 3.
It's a must-buy game for me.
