Hi. I recently purchased a HP Pavillion 27 all in one pc.
It crashes at random occasions, BSOD with UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION or CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED
It does not write a dump file. Configured Pagefile size bigger than total memory. I can crash manually and write a dumpfile using WhoCrashed.
Windows has all updates, nvidia graphics card has most recent drivers. I disabled fast boot. I disabled all non microsoft startup items and services.
I removed all attached USB devices. Bluetooth adapter for keyboard+mouse are still in use.
I tried to narrow down the situation when it happens, at first i assumed it would be related to specific programs.
Therefore changed the antivirus from bitdefender to avast and the browser from chrome to firefox.
No change in behaviour, even crashes when only firefox is running and playing youtube music.
Some days i dont have a single crash, some days i have 10+
I dont see the pattern.
Any help welcome :)

Solution
Starting to think its hardware. As i said, BSOD normally solved after a clean install.

its possibly the boot drive - would explain lack of dump files as well.

MIght be best returning to HP, get a replacement and hopefully it won't get same errors

Brand new PC shouldn't have any problems.

what repair install will do is replace current install with a new one, but back to when 1903 was just new, so that patch will be removed and likely reinstalled again

a Fresh install would do same thing. IT just removes everything and starts afresh.

it shouldn't make any difference...

when does it crash? at startup or during operation. Be nice to know which process was dying each time.

most crashes are at operation but since the latest reset, it barely lives longer than 15 minutes. can't create the installation medium to do the in place upgrade. trying another reset, then trying again to do the in place upgrade

at operation? startup? might explain why it survives a reset - reset doesn't replace all windows files, some critical files live in the boot partition.

Why can't you make the installer? might need to use another PC to make the installer, one where windows 10 isn't broken.

Alright, got the in place upgrade done (used create a medium for another pc to shorten the duration of the process / restart with the downloaded iso when it crashes) and after a few attempts, it lived long enough :)
Now on a fresh installation.
Paused windows updates and did nothing except chrome browser install yet.
Should i go ahead and download updates or proceed another way?
Windows version is 1903 on build 18362.30

So i had a support call with HP today and they also blame the hardware. Crashed twice during the phonecall with hp about 6 hours ago. Was set on returning it to the vendor, which they are fine with. But they can not replace it, just cashback. The same product costs now 20% more in their shop. So i couldn't get it again for the same price. To my surprise, it didn't crash over the last 5-6 hours (usually does once a hour). Will see if the problem comes back and return the machine (and probably buy a whole different product then) if it does :)

Waited one more bluescreen, then packed it up and brought it to the store :) Went with their repair option. So they will send it in to HP, who will decide if i get a replacement or if they repair the existing machine. I'm fine with either. Worst case they return the same machine without doing much. I would then wait for the next bluescreen and send it right back in, i guess then i will finally get a replacement for sure :)

that doesn't sound like "fixed" to me...

is windows on the ssd or does it crash during install? have you run HP Assistant again if its a clean install?

when you get Critical process died, does it give you a file name? As if we know that it might narrow it down?

it shouldn't be the ssd
did I get you to run Intel Processor Diagnostics Tool?
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005567/processors.html

never noticed what it looks like... how do you do anything inside it? I assume its similar to this - https://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=4YQ93AA&opt=&sel=DTP

if I asked you to check ram, could you remove it?
cause thats one possibility
Try running memtest86 on each of your ram sticks, one stick at a time, up to 4 passes. Only error count you want is 0, any higher could be cause of the BSOD. Remove/replace ram sticks with errors.
every bit of data that runs has to go through ram so its possible.

any other USB devices apart from mouse/kb? anything using the card reader?

i called in to hp today and they will collect some system information file remotely and try to look into it at their side. i don't see how as there is no dump file but okay. at least they do something 🙃 i answered your questions below, using a separate line starting with A:
i hope that is readable

that doesn't sound like "fixed" to me...

is windows on the ssd or does it crash during install? have you run HP Assistant again if its a clean install?
A: on the ssd, they shipped it preinstalled from repair. did run windows updates and hp support assistance updates

when you get Critical process died, does it give you a file name? As if we know that it might narrow it down?
A: nope. got a picture / photo of the display taken yesterday, wil try to upload it somewhere and link it here

it shouldn't be the ssd
did I get you to run Intel Processor Diagnostics Tool?

A: not yet, can do

A: thats it, slightly different specs (other gfx card and such) but you got the idea right. dont think i am allowed to do anything inside it

if I asked you to check ram, could you remove it?
A: sadly not, AIO PC, might void my warranty if i try to open the case

cause thats one possibility

A: had the same idea, did run the HP system diagnostics memory test on the highest setting yesterday, tested for 5 hours and found no problem

any other USB devices apart from mouse/kb?
A: usb charger for phone but tested without and it crashed as well
anything usingthe card reader?
A: no

the system was now up and running for about 14 hours without a bsod. i tried to crash it by launching firefox and opening a youtube video. it worked. no 10 minutes in and it crashed :)
listening to youtube is a very common thing to do for me, so i think a browser+youtube was present at most (but definitely not all, same occured at the windows login screen or while booting up) of the bluescreens.
does that tell us anything?

edit: i initially used chrome and changed to firefox in the very first days to see if it is browser related

CPU looks fine - its seldom problem, just had to check.

SInce its been a while since last BSOD, wait until it happens again.

It sounds like the files might be user files that are corrupted, given it doesn't always happen at startup.

Are you using the same user name each time? Do you create a user with an email address you have given Microsoft? just wonder if the user profile is corrupted. Crit process died errors shouldn't survive clean installs.

if you do use same user, try making a local user and see if it makes any difference - https://support.microsoft.com/en-au...-create-a-local-user-or-administrator-account - make it admin so it has same access as normal user.

local user since the beginning :-/ with admin rights.
it crashed within less than 10 minutes of listening to youtube while it did run for about 14 hours without a crash before. maybe sound related?

Another critical process died?

there has to be some record of the crashes. Can you search for event viewer
in the right hand column, look in custom views/admin events
there will be errors here - there are always errors here, most can be ignored. A system with no problems will still have errors in here.

find the time of the last crash and look for any events right before the crash, copy/paste any of them in here. Its probably that after the crash you were getting event 161 or 36, I have been helping someone else with an error and they too aren't getting dumps.
there will be a critical error around the time of crash, should make it easier to find. Event 141 will show up, its a reaction by windows to the restart

Another place that might show the error is reliability history but event viewer might show us more
any red X showing on chart is an error, click on it and see what its description is. Any restart will show as a hardware error, sort of looking for something else.

I don't like guessing, no dumps doesn't help.

have you run memtest?

I did run the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool before the machine went into repair and the HP Diagnostics Tools Memory test yesterday. Did not run memtest86.

It crashed 4 times over the last 3 hours. The eventlogs did not contain anything helpful for most of the crashes, but for the last one, there are disk errors. HP is also investigating the issue, they are generating detailed system information and will discuss it internally as a next step. from what i understand, they dont think the SSD Is being faulty. it would be a lot of bad luck to have two faulty SSDs in a row. they rather think the disk errors are a symptom, not the cause.

I uploaded the full systemlog here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/15mUS1U96k9wC10nKVytyDwZs7WyTPgm6/view
It apparently cleared the logs when i did the upgrade to win 10 1903 today, but there are 4 crashes in the log

To summarize it, for the previous crashes, the ones where no disk errors are there, it logs literally nothing, then goes to event 6008 (shutdown unexpected), 161 (dumpfile creation failed) and 41 (unexpected shutdown).

i think i let HP look at it, I don't think its the ssd either. ITs too unlikely you get 2 bad ones, as they said. More likely something we haven't replaced.

I am just not sure what it is really. 161 is why we get no dumps. but figuring out why that is happening would be helpful as well. NO dumps is why we had to guess what cause might be. No events almost means windows doesn't know why it crashed, and that points at hardware.

I am not sure why, but it now refuses to boot. Goes into automatic repair instead, fails to repair, doesn't let me uninstall latest updates or go back to a system restore point, didn't boot into safe mode.. Could use reset your pc
