Budget gaming laptop for occasional gaming

I'm about to start finishing my degree online and my current laptop is several years old and slow. I spent a good bit of money when it was new but it never lived up to expectations. After some research I figured out it was the crappy integrated graphics card. I don't know a whole lot about computers so bear with me.

So this time I want something that I can do a little gaming on. Mostly I just want to play the Sims 4 and possibly some others. I am not a serious gamer and likely never will be. I am also thinking about trying to teach myself to use Photoshop etc, but again nothing serious.

Doing some research and I find a few in the 700- 1000 range, but with too many complaints. Quite a few that get too hot, or have serious flaws that brick the machine.

So is there a laptop out there in my price range that can do what I need, or do I need to get a desktop? I really can't afford to spend more than $1000, so if I got a desktop that
price would have to include a display.

I would really appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Any laptop will have complaints about them online, you will never find one if you look at those bad reviews, unless it's something known with the system that is actually an issue, not just a normal failure rate.

This one looks great and is within my price range. How many years do you think I'd get out of it before it would become obsolete? Do you think I could get 3 years for my purposes, or is that asking too much?
