Hello everyone, I want to build a budget build solely for gaming and some programming task. The rig I have thought is a Phenom based rig, I mean Phenom 2 x4 965 which is still rocking on the market. I am too stucked with fx4100 which abt $10 difference( I mean fx is less). But the performance is huge in Phenom. So what should I buy cause I'm in tight budget and want to handle games upto year 2015..at least???

Solution
The two cheapest CPUs will be best for you. Either the 2120 or the 965. I would probably take the 2120 because it's cheaper, and uses less power. I'd avoid the 4100, not a good CPU.

I disagree, with the next gen consoles holding 8 core apus/cpus, Threading will likely become important for 2015. Just look at crysis 3 benchmarks to see how an optimized 8 core FX can do, because Crytek took the time to optimize their game for multi cores

To OP: Dont sidegrade to the 4100.

lol Hes not going for an 8 core processor so either way its not going to be an issue and yet in alot of games my dual core I3 3220 outpreforms phenom 2 x4's even if they suppourt 4 cores. Look at toms cpu benchmark for neverwinter lol. Having strong core per core value trumps having 8 pentium 4s strapped together like the vishera octacores

because this is the time of lower core count processing. Games like starcraft 2 for example only use 1 core, so Intel generally has an advantage on that front.(you are speaking to someone with an i3-2120...). The next gen Sony console is using a 8 core jaguar custom APU, which is X86, which is extremely close to how it will run on a computer. Game devs like to optimize their stuff as much as they can on the console front as most AAA titles are console ports. Thats why games from the start of the 360/PS3 era look so different compared to the end, its due to devs extracting as much performance they can out of the old cpus/gpus. 2014 will likely bring in the PS4 and Nextbox(whatever the official name will be) and 2015 is where most of the AAA titles will likely to be churned out.

Like I already mentioned, Crytek was only the first one to venture into optimizing by 4+ core optimization. There's a reason why Hyperthreading on the Intel Front doesn't do much(comparing i5 to I7) which is generally explained due to optimization ended generally at 4 cores as of the moment. it will be an entirely different story next gen.

But hes planning on going for a quad core.. at this moment the best quad core on a budget is the 3550p hands down and by the time there is optimization for 8 cores in most games i guarantee intel will have 6-8 core cpus mainstream with better core per core performance still

At a specific budget, yes the 3550p might be the best quadcore, but I think that's a different budget than the OP is looking at. For the roughly $100 price point, the PII 965 is still a really great value.

I guess my question would be do you want to play all games at full in 2015? That is not probable, but more than likely you'll be able to play most games with a decent frame rate with some lowered settings (of course it is absolutely impossible to tell what will be required two years from now). I would assume you'll do fine because I don't believe that there are any games right now that require a quad core to play at minimum, but new games are for the most part multi-threaded. I suspect that there is still some good life left for decent quad cores like the 965.

Which is why I said don't bother. He already has a good chip, nothing else will be more powerful until he starts spending a lot of money. Might as well stick to what you have.

Thank you all for your suggestions...I will only play at normal resolutions at 1600x900 etc at my 20inch Dell monitor. my GPU would be 7770 or an GTX 650...and of course a quad core processor...

you could suggest a price range your willing to spend and the area you live in to give everyone a better understanding of what you could squeeze into your price range by going intel vs amd. Newer computer chips tend to have better future performance, since they incorporate newer technology onto their die for faster processing of tasks like video encoding etc.

Taking a chip that is already 6 years old might not give you the best performance compared to a chip 1-2 years old but having less cores.

basically I am from India and facing lots of problems like the price of the CPU which is increased upto $20-$30 due to foreign trade. lots of cpus are not available here just because they are not thought to get used. here common CPU include Pentium,i3,i5 and rare AMDs.

my part of thinking was to choose from:
1. Phenom 2 x4 965..$123
2. i3 2120 ..$118
3. fx 4100...$115
4. a10 5800k(my favorite but too costly out here)...$157

although my gpu is a faster one so I have gotta choose from above them and could I have a dual core CPU like Pentium g850 or g2010 etc..

You are highly misinformed. Next gen consoles are using AMD's APU's so I guarantee there will be optimizations for AMD CPU's and GPU's. In 2015 a Dual core will be the laughing stock of the group of processors.

Unless there is a huge price difference, why not get the i3-3220 instead? It's better, has more features, and much more recent.

~Increase your 965be's voltage to 1.4-1.5 depending on how your CPU handles it (they are all different mine gets to 4.1ghz at 1.37volts)
Then adjust your multiplier to 20 and leave your ref clock at 200.
Well done you now have a 4ghz Pehnom 2 x 4 which is very comfortable at games if you want an amd upgrade the best you can do for gaming is a FX8350 or a Phenom ii x4 980.
Btw if you convert a 8350 to a quad core it becomes very good for gaming and is the closest match to a i5 3570K and performs better on windows 8 (but who wants that).

For about $110-120 you can buy the FX6300, which would be an upgrade, especially if you OC. Though, if you're going to OC, you should just spend the money on the equipment to OC, and turn your 965BE up to about 4.0 GHz and go with that. The performance difference between it and a newer 6 core won't be dramatic enough to warrant spending the money.

Wait for Steamroller and buy a new board and CPU together in about 6-12 months...that money will be better spent. Unless you were going to something like one of the 8 core CPUs, in which case I would say go ahead and do that, they're pretty strong as it is right now.

well thank you for the replies...Actually I don't have a CPU and previous was core2duo e4500 which I sold it a month before...now I have 7770 OC edition ...so I wanted a quad core CPU and I think Phenom will be better...but it's good to get a new chip that's why so totally confused because in my budget fx4100 was way there but comparing benchmarks Phenom was much better...I'm just adjusting a CPU to compete my hard on GPU(at least..!!!)...Im damned by my budget...I can't see my PC stoned any more....!!

please suggest do the Pentium g2020 will bottleneck my 7770...?????

I have dedcided for 2120..same price as 965...better memory controller ...fx4100 is not a true quad core and windows can't just advantage of modular technology in fx ...

if I can adjust my economics..then will go for 3220..

Thank you for all your time and judgements..!
