Approximate Purchase Date: Preferably this week; would like to have built it during vacation.

Budget Range: ~800-1200; don't need to adhere too strongly to this.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, using the internet, and programming are all equally important to me; I'll also be using the computer to watch videos, but I'm not too picky about quality for that.

Edit: Oh, and I really like to have lots of stuff open 😀. Despise closing and reopening things.

Parts Not Required: Keyboard, mouse, speakers, monitor.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: newegg.com

Country: US of A

Parts Preferences:

Overclocking: No!

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe :O, I have another GPU that I can take out of my current computer, but I don't know how to setup these things or even if it will let me. Just go with no actually. :O

Monitor Resolution: 1024x768

Additional Comments: The quieter the better! Really appreciate extremely quiet PCs; if possible, minimal lighting as well, but look at these two things as a last priority (and the lighting as even more of a last priority.)

This will be my first time building a computer, and I'll probably be following a generic online tutorial of sorts to help me along the way. If there's anything you think I may get confused with, help is much appreciated!

Solution
i say this as nice as i possibly can but manahnen has choosen parts that basically contradict everything the Original poster asked for.

you recommended a overclocking board and an unlocked cpu and a cpu cooler. all unneccissary since he doesnt want to overclock. also you recommended a recertified hard drive? common man and a small one at that. also you can spend less on the psu as you only need a 500w unit and the case is a little pricy.

sorry to chew ya apart but what you would buy isnt what the OP asked for.

a few suggestion OP. include a new screen with your build. its a shame to be playing and game on a 1000 dollar rig at 1024X768. also id recommend overclocking or atleast making yourself have the option to overclock down...

A little pricey and i guess u could go with an i5 2400, this is what I might use for my build. Don't know if you need the software

should get 8gb of ram at 1600mhz, this should be futureproof for about the next 4 or so years. Make sure you get the ram as a set of 2x4gb and not 4x2gb, this will allow for some expansion if more is so desired. a 650 watt power supply should work with this system if you don't plan to overclock or add another video card. Make sure you don't just buy the cheapest power supply they have either, there is a difference in quality that can be quite large. I would suggest a corsair or a thermaltake.

If you are not OCing then go with 1333 mhz ram, or 1600 if you find a good deal. 1600 and above is for overclockers to add extra stability and a little extra speed (though not much).

Go for a 750W power supply, or even a 700W for a pair of 560ti. The extra power of the 850W will not hurt anything, you just dont need it.

If you are sure you do not want to OC then go for the 2500 or 2400 instead of the 2500K. They are still great CPUs and you would save a few bucks. Also check a local Microcenter if you have one as their prices really cannot be beat!

The cooler master is optional. The stock cooler is just fine (and very quiet compared to the GPU coolers). But if you eventually replace the stock GPU coolers with silent ones then you will want the hyper212 because the intel fan would be noticeable at that point. If you finally decide on the 2500k and overclock then the hyper212 becomes a necessity.

id also recommend setting yourself up for the option for overclocking so switch out the cpu, mobo and add a cpu cooler.

all that stuff add 85 bucks.
grand total with what i recommend 1010. that computer will play any game with the highest setting with MAYBE a AA slider down a little.

Solution
Do you have a Micro Center near you? That's probably the best place to pick up your core i5 2500k + mobo. You get $50 off the P67/Z68 mobo if you bundle it with i5 2500k.

Grand total for both comes out to be $264.98 with GIGABYTE GA-P67A and i5 2500k.
😀

There's nothing wrong with having more PSU or RAM than you need. At worst, your electric bill will be slightly higher and you might have to tweak the clock on the RAM.

Having a quiet case does have its cost, but here's a recommendation:
COUGAR Evolution Black SECC ATX Full Tower Computer Case with Dual 12cm COUGAR TURBINE HYPER-SPIN Bearing Silent Fans
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811553002

A quiet GPU:
ASUS EAH6850 DC/2DIS/1GD5/V2 Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121419&Tpk=asus%206850

120mm ball bearing fan equipped power supply:
CORSAIR Professional Series Gold AX750 (CMPSU-750AX) 750W ATX12V v2.31 / EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139016

Caviar Blue is nice. If you want extreme quiet, go for a SSD.

Those should get you started in the right path.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I'm looking over cbrunnem's build and it seems to match what I want. For my first build, I think I will just glue myself to your suggestions and just see if I can put a computer together first! Thanks again!

if you go with the recommended parts it essentially the same as what i have except the cpu as i have a 2600k and it will play everything no problem.
