Approximate Purchase Date: 3-4 months - going to be buying 1 part each month due to other financial focuses.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: High-end Gaming - potential streaming and machinama projects as a hobby. I really want to have the capability to use VR on this system as well - other than that - standard surfing, music etc.

Are you buying a monitor: Not yet - that will come after I get the system going, happy enough using my ancient one for now.

Parts to Upgrade: I was considering:-
Power Supply - *REUSING* (hopefully that is) HX850W Corsair Professional Series
Sound Card - *REUSING* (hopefully that is) SoundBlaster X FI Titanium Fatal1ty
Motherboard - Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 5 (Already Bought - Sitting in box waiting to be used)
CPU - Intel i7-6700k - Any other processors with a LGA 1151 which would give good performance?
Graphics Card - Geforce GTX 970 - Other recommendations welcome for better value for same performance or if I wouldn't notice a difference.
RAM - GSkill Ripjaws V 2x8GB DDR4 2133Mhz - Other recommendations welcome for better value for same performance or if I wouldn't notice a difference.

Do you need to buy OS: No - Windows 7 64bit on disk as well as current Hard Drive, however when I get it going hopefully i'll be able to upgrade to Windows 10 64bit for free.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: None - I shop for the cheapest, why pay more when it's the same thing? (careful with returns policy etc)

Overclocking: Maybe - I dabbled with it in my last build but lack a full understanding as to how to maximise it - so potentially.

SLI or Crossfire: No? Didn't need more than one GPU in my last build so there was no need to link - hoping it will be the same this time.

Your Monitor Resolution: No clue yet - I like the idea of having dual monitors - but ideally something that just makes the games look crisp and kick ass.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: My Motherboard, Graphics card and CPU all need replaced due to damage. Damage occurred 2 years ago and I left it to allow time for the technology to jump ahead - again, I'm really interested in VR.

I'm hoping the parts i'm considering buying will be compatible together and work effectively to give me the performance I want within games but also give me the potential of accessing VR. The last build I did was back in 2011 and I just want reassurance that this set up will work - or even ways I may be able to save money if I can change RAM/GPU and not notice a massive dip in frame rate.

Thanks for reading this!

Solution
Save your money for 4 months and then buy all at once .
If you must buy each month then buy the graphics card LAST .
Ideally work out the resolution first and then buy a graphics card that is appropriate
