Its a matter of personal preference, however Windows 8.1 improves performance in some games, eg: Battlefield 4, due to support for DirectX 11.2 and better multi-core utilisation.
Windows 8.1 performs much better than 7... It is designed for the new multi-core/threaded CPU´s and handles multi GPU much better! Since I switched from 7 to 8.1 I noticed a gain in Battlefield 4 of 10 FPS!

One more thing, I saw your new PC config - saving on motherboard is never a good option. Maybe you want to cut on the case and go for ASUS or MSI.

"known to fail" as in you had a bad experience once and now generalize for all MSI products? I'm running a top spec PC on MSI Z87 G43 Gaming flawless since day 1! Solid build, top notch components, great looks and for almost the same price as AsRock above mentioned!

No1 it I was my opinion I was talking about
No2 I've used 3 MSI Mobos in the past, they all had booting issues and capacitor problems and one of the SATA bays didn't work, one of them a z77 board.
No3 not for all MSI products their GPUs are great! Only their mobos.
No4 relates to number 2 they don't tend to fail on such a large scale that it's devastating and blows the machine.
No5 by research I've read that there are more problems on MSI boards compared to others and people don't buy them as much as others(but that's the least important part).

Nice Build. The only change I would make would be go with Windows 7 Pro Version. It will handle more memory. Home version is limited to 4gb physical Ram. Will not recognize more than that. Pro will go as high as 192gb memory. Good Luck

You are right! Alienware is overpriced! I was looking at one and after so many reviews about motherboard and RAM failure I just chose to build one!

Here is my build!

You don't need the network adapter
You almost certainly don't need the sound card
Any particular reason for that specific CPU?

No reason for the CPU I just want something fast, and that seemed great for the price! I will be recording some game play so I want to be able to render a video. I know I need more RAM for rendering so I plan to upgrade in the future. Let me know if you have any more suggestions!

CPU - Intel Core i5 4670k, socket 1150 (3.4 GHz) = 207€
Mobo - ASUS Z87K = 110€
RAM - GSKILL KIT 8GB DDR3 1866MHZ SNIPER (CL9 - 1.5V) = 72€
GPU - SAPPHIRE R9 270X DUAL-X OC 2GB DDR5 PCI-E = 186€
PSU - ok
Storage - SSD ok; HDD ok

All the rest is more of a personal choice so I´m not going to suggest any change :) I´m suggesting the AMD graphic card still I don´t know how it performs against that 750 you mentioned! Anyway, I think the CPU is a muche better choice than the one you chose and RAM is 1866. In the end it might go a bit expensive but it´s a tighter rig :)

Im from the USA so if I could have the amounts in $'s that would be great! Maybe some links for the parts too!

Thanks!

For any of you worried about upgrading to windows 8 and having to deal with that horrendous UI, there are things you can do to fix it. I'm pretty sure you can disable Apps, so you don't have that to deal with.

There is also software, such as Classic Shell, which gives you back a real start button that looks exactly like Windows 7. I have been seriously considering upgrading from 7 to 8.1... but I just don't feel the need. The only game that would truly benefit from it is BF4 and I don't play it often.

8.1 alleviates most of the Win 8 issues.
Boot directly to Desktop, pin your most used applications to the taskbar.....looks a LOT like 7.

8.1 did not alleviate most of the issues... I use 8.1 on my work computer, and 8.1 didn't help very much, if at all. If desktop on boot was a major issue for you, then you probably are not a power user. I'm pretty sure you could pin programs in 8.0 as well.. Windows 8/8.1 is the antithesis of a power user, plain and simple.

The most useful feature I got from 8.1 is being able to right click the start button, and it's still disappointing. It also introduced more annoying "features" such as command prompt never opening with admin credentials unless explicitly specified.

Hopefully, the next major update later this year, will actually alleviate some of the issues.

I assure you...I am a 'power user'. And yes, you could pin things with 8 as well.
But whatever...Is it perfect? No! Is it better? Yes.

I started out planning my build based on a LGA 1150 Z87 motherboard and cpu as being the newest and set up for the 4th gen i7 cores. While trying to decide on which cpu to get, based on Passmark ratings http://www.cpubenchmark.net/ for speed/cost, I noticed some of the older chips, 2nd gen i7 cores, were substantially faster for just a little more money.

I was thinking if the 2nd gen i7 cores are faster than 4th gen i7 cores for the same or a little more money, why go with 4th gen? The i7-4930k Passmark rating 13,280 $559.99 LGA 2011 X79 versus the i7-4770k Passmark rating 10,342 $319.99 LGA 1150 Z87. Is 30% more speed worth the $240?

Here is the build I am considering. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3s0I4

Its more than I want to spend, but I figure this build would last me for years.

You can make Windows 8.1 boot to "classic desktop" without any additional software... I was totally sceptic about changing from 7 to 8.1 but then I researched a bit about core and power management (and yes, in Battlefield 4 it´s a huuuuge improvement).

@inspector
Have in mind that socket 2011 has a bigger termal disspation power (TDP 130W) versus socket 1150 (TDP70/80W). This might mean you´ll need a bigger PSU. Also memory modules for X79 are a bit more expensive.

My current gaming rig is Windows 7 Ultimate but I am putting together a new 8.1 rig for AM3+. Yes, you may get issues running older games but as has been mentioned there are compatibility settings you can use. If you do go Windows 8.1, make sure you get the recently released Update 1, which is what adds in the option to boot to desktop rather than the modern interface.

i did this for the main topic but then seen the date and ya, only 5 months late lol

Nice keyboard and mouse :)

It was Tsuhama who picked that, are they good it's sad what i use with my beat DAW computer so sad.

Right, don't get the Asrock Z87 Extreme4 because it was, like, a Tomshardware Smart Buy for 2013 or anything...

MSI and Asus are oh-so-much better... [/sarcasm]

I've used the Extreme4 since November last year with a 4770K oc'd to 4.4G, with absolutely NO stability problems whatsoever.

Also use Windows 8.1. Much faster over Win 7, benchmarked using the exact same computer.

But, hey, just my opinion...
