Hello All,

I was just enquiring as to whether I could, build a mini HDD / SSD test center at home. I have a laptop and one small USB to SATA dock.

What is the actual process of testing the drive / keeping it continuously under load?

Also, I want to practice this thing, because in my local area, I want to offer my services as a HDD / SSD tester for local businesses.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Atif.

Hello!
Sure! To set up a mini HDD/SSD test center at home with your laptop and USB to SATA dock, gather testing software like HDDScan or CrystalDiskInfo. Connect the drive, run initial health and performance tests, and perform stress tests using tools like CrystalDiskMark. This way, you can monitor the drive's performance over time. This setup will help you offer valuable testing services to local businesses.

I use Hard Disk Sentinel to check all drives I acquire. On second-hand drives, I run a long surface test which can take many hours, but gives an excellent pictorial view of the state of the whole drive. The example below shows a particularly bad drive which should be dumped as soon as any data has been recovered.

You can also run a quick 2-minute scan, but this doesn't prove much apart from the fact the drive starts up, plus a look at the SMART data.

A lot depends on how thorough you want to be when testing clients' disk drives. On an 8TB hard disk, it might take Hard Disk Sentinel 10 hours to perform a long surface scan. If you run a Write before Read test, that's 20 hours. Most tests are non-destructive, i.e. you don't erase any data. It's worth spending time if you suspect the drive has problems. Some people run long SMART tests for several days, before installing disks into RAID systems storing important data.

As soon as you start Hard Disk Sentinel, you can monitor the health status of all drives, derived from their SMART data. In the example below, one of the drives is Bad (Health 19%) and should be replaced.

You might not see all the SMART data on some drives when they are mounted externally (in a dock) connected via USB. It all depends on the USB-to-SATA interface. I check most drives plugged directly into the SATA, SAS or M.2 ports in my desktop PCs.
