This is a continuation of this thread:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/247033-31-back-dell-hell-computer

I just felt it was important to make a new thread with my questions now that I have all the pieces and am starting to build it.

I followed this guide:
http://tools.corsairmemory.com/systembuild/print.aspx?report_id=12472

I was able to mount the motherboard, add the new power supply, install the processor and heatsink, install the video card and the memory. Now I have a lot of questions.

I am trying to place the DVD player in the dock for it. But there aren't any places to put screws in for it. Instead the tower has this black plastic device attached to the place where that stuff goes in that slides up and down. It has a picture of a lock when sliding down and a picture of an unlocked lock when sliding up. I played around with it and the dvd player and it doesn't seem to affect the dvd player one bit.

I have a bunch of small cords attached to the tower that I need to connect to the motherboard. They handle the extra usb slots in the front, the extra audio slots in the front, and the power, etc lights on the tower itself. A lot of them have a colored band around them, and I've found a place on the motherboard that is one big rectangle of slots to put things with different colors around them. I matched up many of the colors, but I have a few wires left over that don't match any of the colors and I have one that is actually the same size as the power cord for the fan installed on the inside back of the tower. The four-pronged white adapter but it is missing one of the prongs. I only have one place to put something like that, but I have 3 items that need that place. One is for the fan on the tower. The other is for this cord and the third is for my video card.

My video card had a slot in the top of it, and it came with a cord, that when you put the cord in the slot, it would have that same adapter (4-pronged white). Now how do I hook up all 3 items that need that one adapter?

When hooking up the power supply to the motherboard, I found many of the slots for the cords, but I couldn't find one. I have a cord that looks like a square with an adapter that has a 2 by 2 look. I can't find the place that I can put this square adapter. Here is a picture of it:

I'm trying to install my hard drive. There are two places to put the hard drive in the very bottom of the case. I thought it was a weird position because the place to plug them to the motherboard is more than halfway up the case. Anyways, I can't seem to fit the hard drive into the holder for it. It fits well in the place where you put the floppy drives, but sticks out and I know it isn't supposed to go there. I can't seem to get it to fit. Is there any reason the hard drive wouldn't fit? I've tried putting it in upside down and right side up.

Okay, that's it for now. Any help would be a GODSEND!

I bought a AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ and it came with a heatsink/fan that goes on top. The processor is the right kind for the mother board (AM2 socket) and it fits in fine. The problems begin when I try to add the heatsink. The heatsink has problems because it has these golden tubes that stick out of different sides to it. I've looked over the paper that came with the processor that shows how to install the heatsink, but the heatsink in the picture is different than the one that shipped with the box.

I've tried putting it on there, but it goes on crooked and really worries me. It is very hard to remove after it goes on too.

What can I do? The heatsink had pre-appled bonding agent so I know I need to clean off both surfaces now and apply bolding agent again when I try to put it on again, but what can I do? What kind of object should I use to clean off both surfaces?

ARG!

Is the 6-pin PCIe power connector the "My video card had a slot in the top of it," slot you mentioned?
The 6-pin into 2 4-pin adapter the video card came with is only used for PSUs that have no 6-pin PCIe power connector. Your Antec Earthwatts 500 should have TWO PCIe 6-pin connectors and so you would not need the 6 into 4 adapter that came with your video card.

DVD install: PDF manual shows installing 4 screws that come with the case into DVD which is what the sliding latch should hook onto.

HD install: The PDF manual shows HD bracket being removed from case, HD installed and put back into the case.

The case PDF manual also has hints to help you figure out the wiring. It's not exactly a great manual to say the least.

That material that is on the heatsink is TIM (Thermal Interface Material) and once it's been used, as yours has, it should be cleaned off and replaced. Cleaning it off is as simple as some rubbing alcohol and a coffee filter, at least that's what I use. For the rest of your questions I would need to know what case you have and infact a full list of everything you bought would allow us to guide you.

No offense to you. But I think you need to find a friend or a professional to finish for you before you screw it up bad. I can't perform heart surgery so I don't try. It is obvious to me you have no idea what the hell you are doing.

Read your manual word for word. If you are still confused read it again. Then if you still have no idea find someone who does.

The case wires dont hook up by color. The manual telss you what goes where.

Do you only have the 4pin? You may need a PSU with an 8pin if that is a pic of your board. The four would probably boot it but I wouldn't recommend it.

Your stock AMD CPU heat sink fan should look like this - correct? Review of the stock HSF
Use lint free cloth wipes to give the CPU and HSF contact area a good cleaning. Coffee filters are often recommended. Here is an AMD video that shows the cleaning process: http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/DownloadableAssets/04-English-K8-Cleaning-HighRes.wmv
You'll need to get some new thermal compound - I prefer the non-conductive grease like Artic Cooling MX-2 over the metallic stuff like Artic Silver 5.
Lightly touching the RAM should be OK. If you can slightly wiggle the RAM it's probably not too tight a fit.

Can you be more specific about the problem? Is it crooked side-to-side? One side higher than the other?
You can do a test fit without the thermal grease till you're happy with the setup.

There are a couple user reviews on the NewEgg site that mention the HSF installation trouble with X2 6000+
NewEgg customer review of Biostar TF570 motherboard
It sounds as those the stock HSF for X2 6000+ might be different from other X2 models.

Cons: the CPU fan that came with my AMD 6000+ wasnt quite touching the CPU close enough. Copper tubeing was catching on the fan slot, but I snipped the 2 little plastic tabs and it fit fine.

Page 5 Timbo 8/14/2007 12:01:42 PM
Cons: Heat pipes from CPU fan interfere with MOBO CPU mount. Requires fan to be mounted at a 2-5 degree angle. No biggie.

Other Thoughts: This is my fifth build. Dual GB ethernet is only useful if you're running a server or if you're connecting to 2 different LANs. The heat pipes of the stock cpu cooler causes the HSF to sit askewed (blocking a RAM slot). I have the locking lever toward the middle of the board. If I ever pull the Processor out I'm going to reverse the locking lever. My sys: X2 6000, 2 XFX 7900 GS, 2GB ADATA DDR2 800, 2 DVD drives, floppy, SATA HDD, Corsair HW520W PSU, WinXP.

During your next test fit try turning the HSF 180 degrees and see if that works better.

I can't really turn the heatsink/fan 180 degrees. The power cord for it is connected to one end of the heatsink and if you try to install it 180 degrees the other way, the cord has to wrap around the side of it and it can't reach to the place on the motherboard where you plug it in.

Even then, I have been able to install it 180 degrees but it has the same problem with the metal pipes causing it to register crookedly.

Thanks for the help folks. I'm still looking for suggestions. I feel I might need to buy another heatsink/fan for this though.

My heatsink does not look like the one above. It has half the pipes. I don't like the pipes anyways and will probably just buy another heatsink.
