Tom's recommended cpu for high end gaming is $200 to $300:- Athlon 64 3400+ (Newcastle, 2.4 GHz) Socket 754. Can someone let me know the best mobo to go with this cpu socket and if this is the best cpu/socket/motherboard to go with for a higher end system. Also can you recommend the proper top of the line ram for the board you recommend.

I just upgraded my son's old XP 2000 based machine. I decided to upgrade his MoBo, vid card and CPU fan and cooler. I went with the ASUS A7N8X-E DELUXE NFORCE2 MoBo. It was a slick build, great bios, easy install and the NForce Chipset is solid as a rock. For $86 bucks off of NewEgg, you couldn't do much better...

He's looking for an A64 board, not an AXP board.

I like the Asus K8N-E Deluxe. It uses the Nforce3 250gb chipset, and comes with all the bells and whistles. Most people here prefer nvidia chipsets for AMD.
High priced memory isn't worth it on A64 boards, they already have aLL mem controler in the ODMC.

Now when you recommend Asus K8N-E Deluxe. It uses the Nforce3 250gb chipset, does this board support the amd 64bit chip I listed? What is the chipset #? what does 250 gb mean? Is this Nforce's newest board? How much?

Oh yeah what's ODMC stand for? How much more is the memory for an amd64 board compared to the chip that your suggesting? And what chip are you recommending to go with this board? Sorry for all the questions..

250GB = on-chip Gigabit LAN controller and hard firewall
ODMC = On-die memory controller
A64-3400+ is a socket 754 CPU. A64-3500+ is a socket 939 CPU. The 8KN-E is a 754 motherboard.

Abit IS7 - 3.0C @ 3.6ghz - Mushkin PC4000 (2 X 512) - Sapphire 9800Pro - TT 420 watt Pure Power
Samsung 120gb ATA-100 - Maxtor 40gb ATA - 100

The K8N-E Deluxe board supports all socket 754 chips, including the A64 3400+.
ODMC stands for On Die Memory Controler.
The board uses DDR memory pc3200/DDR400, is good.
The 3 in Nforce3 250, means A64, the 250 is the series, amd the gb stands for giga bit lan, though it also includes sata, firewire, and a host of other features.
I dont think the price of the 3400+ is worth it when compared to the A64 3200+.
