I currently do not have any GPU as I have sold my previous one.

My specs are:
CPU: i7 4770k
MoBo: G1.Sniper B5
Ram: 8GB 1600mhz Corsair Vengeance Kit
PSU: 850 Watt Smart Gold Thermaltake
Monitor: 1920 x 1080p

I can now afford to buy a GTX 980 but should I actually wait for the R9 390x to come? I know AMD is somehow buggy in terms of it's drivers and supports unlike Nvidia but will R9 390x beat GTX 980? If I wait to buy R9 390x will it worth the wait? Please tell me as I'm new to this.

Agree with Krell^, the 390x *should* smoke the 980. That said, release date, powerconsumption, and cost are all TBD. If you need a card now, dont wait.

*Also agree with the 970 recommendation...or a 290X if you find a good deal.

Well if you are the 1440p lover wait for 390x the performance should be OK on 1440p but definitely for 1080p might as well get 970, that card should last as least 3 years before getting a higher gen from nvidia or amd. 970 i have to say is v.good and you have an intel card(not that amd sucks, got one myself) so it should be good experience

Actually, I'll be upgrading to 1440p after a year or so. So having that said I want to buy myself a GPU that will give me Extreme Performance on 1080p and 1440p too.

@Pyre, you mean to say GTX 970 can get me max-out any games I want for the next 3 yrs? Are you sure mate? Then what about GTX 980?

I am not only concerned about being able to max-out all games, I want to have quality FPS. That gives me more than enough FPS so please suggest.

Well the reason I never bothered mentioning 980 is because... 970 around 275£ then 980 around 467£... that price jump is honestly a joke, the performance gap is nothing much, its like 10-15fps difference in some games.
In my case I seriously don't think extra 200£ for 10-15fps is worth it that honestly is a joke to me, no offense if you don't feel the same way.

But the way I am when it comes to spending money on technology, I dont splash cash on whats not worth it especially when the cheaper product's performance is not far from the more expensive one.
Its the same BS apple get their customers excited over, from an iphone 5 to 5s or iphone 6 to 6s its a joke when companies do that and customers are foolish enough to fall into the trap. The performance gap is too small to negotiate a BIG difference to pay more £££ for new version. What a joke

Well, If I get a GTX 980 instead or wait for R9 390x (Having said that I'll be getting a 1440p soon) so wouldn't I receive better FPS than I would using a 970?

I completely agree with your point. But what do you have to say GTX 970 being only 3.5gb card? I know the other 0.5gb is there but it's way too slow. Modern Games like GTA 5 or others, If everything is maxed out used almost 4gb of VRAM so Will GTX 970 give me that performance I deserve mate?

Oh now that you include the vram issue, i guess future games may require more. *Sigh*

Maybe the 980 will do ya justice, if your patient you can wait to see what 390X offers, I myself hope to see a good series in June. Hope they don't push the release date back.

So do you think you can wait for june??

the 390x is using hbm memory right? wouldnt that allow it to easily have more than 4gb thats much faster and solve that *issue*

I heard this "HBM" memorey feature should be 3x faster than gddr5, it should offer higher performance to the table I hope.
SKWorkouts can wait for 390x if he wants but as the 980 GTX, I don't think its worth it, maybe the price will decrease after 390x is released.

Almost everyone is saying GTX 980 isn't worth that much of a price comparing to GTX 970 apart from the vram issue. Well, I'll just wait until R9 390x gets released I guess. Being a gamer it would be more than difficult to wait but I'll manage it I guess lol 😛

I just hope R9 390x comes in June! I just hope! @Pyre, what do you think would the price range of R9 390x is gonna be? Between 600-700$? @krells,

Yes I would guess 700$ or less. Try you hardest to wait...:)
YOU CAN DO IT just one month, AMD better not push back that date
