(some of you might hate me for AMD but I don't mind, I have NVIDIA cards too) I have a MSI 6700 XT its overclocked to 104% and the temps hit 110 c when i play certain games, I want to know if there is a way to reduce the temp besides underclocking. and can this harm the lifespan.

I'm pretty sure 110C is exceeding, if not right up on the operating limits for that video card. Otherwise yes, this will reduce the lifespan of the card. By how much we don't know because there's no magical formula.

If you want to find ways to better cool the video card, we have to know what case you have, where the fans are, and what other hardware you have in there that might interfere with how the card is getting its air (e.g., do you have another expansion card somewhere?). Otherwise a 3% overclock is not really worth keeping except for benchmark scores. You're likely not even seeing that much of a gain in games.

Yes, that is definitely way beyond where the card should run. Running at those temps can shorten the lifespan of the card, or kill it off completely. I would remove the overclock - not like 3% even does anything outside benchmarks - and check temps at stock. If they don't significantly improve, I would try applying an undervolt, and/or telling us more about your setup, like case, fans, other components, etc.

Why would anyone hate you for AMD? Choosing a Radeon just means that you got a faster card at whatever price point you paid and you did your part to stop nVidia from gaining a monopoly. It also shows that you're not one of the sheep and think for yourself. Those aren't bad traits, they're to be admired!

The only question I have for you is "How did you measure 110°C?" I ask because, I won't lie, 110°C IS EXTREMELY hot for that GPU. I'm talking dangerously hot.

The RX 6700 XT shouldn't be much higher than 80°C at load. Have you played at all with the fan curve in the Radeon software? If you have played with it to make the card quieter, then I recommend putting it back to stock or higher.

Honestly though, I can't see something like a pointless 3% overclock or a reduced fan curve cause a card's temperature to increase by more than 30°C. Unless you've REALLY dropped the fan speed by a lot or have it stuffed into a tiny case with no airflow, it has to be a problem with the card itself.

I would reset everything on the card to stock settings and contact whoever made the card (AMD, ASRock, Sapphire, XFX, etc.) about an RMA. After reading several RX 6700 XT reviews to gauge what the card should be running at under full load, the highest that I saw anywhere was 85°C with most being in the mid-70s.

I don't want to frighten you but 110°C is much hotter than even the R9 290(X) and HD 6990, cards that were infamous for the heat that they could generate:

I think that you probably have a problem with your card's cooler assembly and should get an RMA done.

my case is one I got in 2021, its the Thermaltake N27 I think, it has 3 fans 2 front and 1 back. I have no expansion cards. and a Ryzen 5 5500. The fans are red Led's only and they came with the case, Im wondering if my fans could be a factor. Also I was wrong it is overclocked closer to 105%

It looks like the front panel is basically a solid piece and a little too close to the front fans. This could be an issue with airflow.

Try opening the case or popping off the front panel if you can and see if things improve.

it has air holes all the way around the side, they are pretty big,
an inch in width. its the arctic one

Sometimes that's not enough to allow for sufficient breathing room, especially if the fans are sticking out into that space.

EDIT: Another look at it, that's not really an inch of clearance where the air vents are. That's more like half an inch which is isn't that sufficient.

maybe I should put one more fan in there?

the fan curve goes to 100% at around 95 c

the fan curve goes to 100% at around 95 c mostly only with ue5 games it does around 108 c to 110 c. for AAA games like apex legends and Ark it is around 90-100 C but its not getting worked to 100% most of the time it is a 2 fan msi version. i wanted to get a 3 fan but my budget didn't allow me to. incase this isn't clear the 110c is the junc temp and the actual temp is around 65 c to 75c, i am using msi afterburner and hwmonitor to see the temps, my cpu never goes above 70 c so maybe my case fans aren't at a high enough setting because of my cpu. the cpu is not overclocked.

Either the cooler has gone bad or the thermal paste has dried up. Go ahead and do a re-paste and see if it helps.

I will try opening my case and testing it, then i will try and get it RMA'd I just hope they accept it
It has to be. There's nothing else that I can think of that could cause a card to run ~30°C over what reviewers saw under load. There could be an issue with the thermal paste but while the product is under warranty, it's nothing that you should attempt yourself because if something goes wrong, you're SOL.

If you card is only 4 months old, MSi will have no choice but to take it back for RMA. Make sure you have your original proof of purchase, just in case.

This is the reason that cards have a warranty and yes, it sucks that it'll be gone for a couple of weeks but as long as you have a decent back-up card (and most people do), you'll barely notice that the other card is gone. I had to RMA my RX 5700 XT twice because the first one XFX sent back had a VRAM error so I was without my RX 5700 XT for over a month.

So, I just dropped the resolution of the games I was playing to 1080p and used my backup card at the time, an R9 Fury. I barely noticed that my RX 5700 XT was missing. Admittedly, I had the advantage of playing one of the most immersive masterpieces that I've ever seen or heard about, AC: Odyssey. 😉

The max temp with 200 sec of furmark it went to 98 C and around 95 C with the case open, don't mind the budget mb I had no money when i first built this in 2020. there aren't that many cables in the way. Its a littile messy but it would take a long time to get it organized
