I am doing a build with a GTX 980.
I have a 24' 144hz BenQ monitor, will the 980 run most games at good settings and compatible framerate?

Solution

Not to an extent that is actually worthwhile. However, I think CPU issues in this thread are being overstated.

An OC on a 6700K - currently the best gaming CPU at any budget - and you might get 4.6Ghz. In gaming you're likely to be running close to your boost clock most of the time, because even when a game uses 4 or more threads, there are generally only one or two threads which are actually pushing the CPU to 100%. So, your current CPU is going to be running close to 3.6Ghz in gaming. Compare that to the best gaming CPU in the world with an overclock, and you're looking at around a 30% performance improvement. There will be edge cases where hyperthreading on the i7 kicks in, or your CPU has to run...

Yep, 980 is a good fit for 1080P 144hz gaming. 100fps + starts to push many CPUs actually. So your frame rate could start to be more CPU dependent.

exactly, this is when unlocked CPUs come in handy.

My CPU is i5 6500 3.2

That can hold you back in modern titles, CPU bottlenecks are pretty common with 120/144 Hz monitors.

Which titles? And how badly will it bottleneck? I was hoping this build would be upgradable in the future

Nah! are you kidding me, he has a great skylake i5. you won't bottleneck your card. after all the titles you are aiming to get 120/144Hz are not that demanding (Overwatch) and the AAA titles that require a lot of horse power are going to be limited by your GPU and not CPU and is pointless to aim for 120/144Hz with them.

So for some big games I can just drop the settings and the hz and be fine?

You dont see any bottlenecks on 60Hz monitors with locked i5s CPUs, because you can easily reach those 60FPS, with 120 Hz monitors is another story, you need both, a really strong GPU and CPU, overclocking your CPU is a must on 120 Hz monitors.

Can I overlcock an i5 6500?

There will be edge cases where hyperthreading on the i7 kicks in, or your CPU has to run closer to base clocks, and the gap might widen more, but generally speaking you're within 30% of the fastest gaming CPU money can buy WITH a standard overclock. That CPU you have is extremely capable. I can't imagine it capping you under 100fps for any significant period in any game, and if it does, it's not like an overclocked 6700K would be able to maintain a 144fps vsync'd at that time anyway, so all you're losing is a handful of FPS over 100... on occasion. Who cares?

TLDR, a 6500 + gtx 980 + 144hz 1080P is a well balanced, high end gaming rig that should give you a heap of fun in your favourite titles.

Don't stress about an upgrade unless you're one of those people who is prepared to throw loads of money away to get the absolute best possible performance.
