[SOLVED] Can a faulty drive make individual files disappear?

I recently bought a brand new drive - it's really fast, and everything seems to work great, except:

1. I was looking for one file on the drive and couldn't find it. It seems to be missing.

2. I also played one video on the drive - the video was fine but it had no audio at all. (It definitely used to have audio as I've played it many times before.)

Apart from these two isolated events, everything else seems fine. And I'm sure there are other explanations. But I wondered if a bad disk could cause these phenomena?

Solution
Yes, my friend's HDD is currently on my bench. His user profiles are gone. Bad sector count was 12,700 and climbing when I left. I'm pretty sure that is why and that a lot more will be missing as well.
